64 1/2 Dearborn - Firewall Pad Pics
« on: July 01, 2015, 10:27:45 PM »
Does anyone have a example of an original Firewall Pad for a 64 1/2?

From searching what else has been posted, it's mainly around SJ and NJ cars, and the reproductions are not even close to the originals, not even the ACC manufactured one.

Looks like the one Charles picked up from a yard I took him to a few years back. Sure its in a car by now

Very nice one and we got lucky they had just pulled just about everything that was in the way as we got there.  They would not have kept it anyway.

Not sure how early (haven't studied Dearborn's) it is since it has the vertical punch out for the AC lines

If you are referring to the Dearborn pad I have for sale it is obvious that you haven't worked with many original firewall mats otherwise you would not have made such a typical arm chair critic "can't turn a wrench" statement.  It is understood by those who have worked with original firewall pads that to take these items out that they are very fragile and easily damaged . It is also understood the many hours it takes to remove one from start to finish. With that understanding the pad in the auction is excellent compared to most. Are there better perfect ones?  Yes, but it was not described as such.  In this case the damage is limited to the top above the wiring harness which I would challenge a person to try and see once installed if you didn't choose to repair that portion. To choose to repair it is straight forward by utilizing "the right stuff" gasket material and a donor piece of material to bond with and a little excess right stuff smeared on top using the flat side of a putty knife lifted straight up from the surface to cause a texture. You blend on ether side of the repair. The same can be done to any cracks in surface from bending. I will also sometimes put a band aid of material (duct tape or other thin strong material with contact adhesive to the back side of a repair for added strength . I go over the the entire front side with a spray coating of black eastwood battery shield, the rubber tool dip in spray can or other black flexible coating products that you can find in about any home depot, lowes or hardware store. This light spray coating give the finished look that the mat had when it was first installed . The mats are difficult to source because one they are hard to get out in one piece and the time one is willing to commit to get one out. If it was easy they would be for sale everywhere. Look for yourself and they are not easy to find. Any thing worth doing is worth doing concours is easy in this case with the typical "Can Do" attitude that most have that read and participate on this site .

Yes, it is a fair amount of work, but IMHO, well worth the work. I spent about 2 weeks 1-2 hrs/day to make one far worse look every bit as good as Jeff's picture above (except mine was for a San Jose application) I do not regret the time spent now that it is done. You should find a thread in the 67-68 section that details things rather clearly.

Bob,
My observation and subsequent comment "Fair amount of work to make it look reasonable again" is based on experience and not as you described it: (arm chair critic, cant turn a wrench)
Bob you opened the door for constructive criticism  by posting the link to your ebay item.
Yes it is repairable and yes people who may be considering a similar repair need to know whats ahead of them.
You turned the thread into a personal jibe.

Good luck with the ebay sale
