Hello,

My 1969 Mustang Coupe was hit on the passenger side near the A-pillar which required the door to be replaced. The body shop replaced the passenger door with another 69 Mustang door from a salvage yard type business. The window glass doesn't seem to fit right compared to the driver's side door glass. They were unable to use my original passenger side door glass as it was chipped in a corner from the accident.

I am trying to figure out how to tell whether the door glass on the passenger side is from a fastback or coupe/convertible. Does anyone have window glass dimensions or other information that can be used to determine this?

Thanks,
Chad

The glass for a fastback model is shorter and if it was installed on a coupe it would be very obvious. I think you have a adjustment issue or the body is still out of alignment. Where does the glass not fit correctly?

+1
Pictures would help on this, preferably one that would be of the whole window opening, with the glass rolled up, and one showing the area you are concerned about.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I went by my father's house today and took a couple of pictures and some video showing what is going on. It looks like the front part of the glass needs to be raised and perhaps the glass leaned in towards the interior of the car to get it to lay in the weatherstripping correctly. The part of the glass though nearest the rear side window looks like it fits pretty well so I am not sure how much leaning in of the glass can actually happen.

The video does the best job of showing the window, end to end and the pictures show along the top of the window and front top corner where there is a pretty substantial gap.

I can give you a comparison between the coupe and fastback glass with pictures, but it would be out of the car and just laying the glass next to each other.  Difficult to measure and describe when installed and in the door.

It looks like coupe glass to me.  When I bought my Mach 1 as a project, it had the opposite: coupe glass on a fastback.  It was really obvious that the glass was wrong.  It wouldn't come within about 2-3 inches of sealing properly.  I'm pretty sure you've got the correct glass in your pictures, you just need to play around with the adjustment more.

Before spending a lot of time adjusting, I would suggest you do some diagonal cross measuring of the door opening. Compare it to the good side. If the new hinge pillar is causing the misalignment, it will show up with this method.
I hope it's the wrong glass instead.  :-\

This might be the time to ask ?  The lower, forward , edge of the fastback door window glass has the CarLite logo and some etched on info.  This is the info on my passenger/right door window.  Does any of this etched info ID a hardtop, a vert or a fastback ?  Brian

I went over and took some diagonal measurements across the door opening and the driver and passenger sides match exactly or at least within an eighth of an inch. I measured diagonals from front to back and from each hinge to the striker and in all cases the measurements were the same or within 1/8 inch.

My window glass has the same CarLite inscriptions on both sides though the passenger side is backwards when looking at it from outside the car whereas the driver side looks correct looking at it from the outside of the car. A picture is linked below:

If I could see a picture of the fastback glass next to the coupe/convertible glass, that would be great as well.

I think the next step is to go back to the body shop and show them the gap between the glass and weatherstripping and see if they are willing to put some more effort into adjusting the glass.

Thank you to everyone for the help. Any other thoughts or advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
Chad

No the info printed in/on the glass does not provide specific applications for the piece

Brian....I am in the middle of writing an article now on the glass and date coding etc.  If you look at what you posted the HG should actually be a date code of a number and a letter.  One of the digits seems to be wrong...I would check that again.

Ooops... My error it should read 8G.  Two windows are 8G, three are 8H and the drivers window is 9M.  I suspect there might be a story there ?   Brian

Yes, sounds like a story.  The driver window was changed and is a bolt in glass probably from December 1969.  Not that unusual that windows have been changed over the 40 or 50 years of life of these cars for different reasons.

It's a glue in and my fantasy theory is the OE window was taken out and replaced with net.  This car has a lot of indicators for a racing history.  Brian

Careful, not all 1970 door glass is bolt in. Some very early 1970 door glass was still glue in, but not the same glass dimensionally as 1969. Remember, the vertical door glass seal was attached to the door glass in 1969, in 1970 the seal attaches to the quarter glass on coupes and convertibles.
