66 seat belts
« on: June 18, 2015, 05:25:03 PM »
Did 66's with seat belts have retractors on the fronts in hardtops, or just loose webbing?  Does standard vs deluxe make any difference in this area?

Please clarify your question. I don't understand what you're asking.

Richard.

from my observations (only) 66 standard belts didn't have the option of retractors, but the deluxe seatbelt option did.

And for the record 66 convertibles could not have the retractors!!!!

I have a 1966 Fastback with seat belt retractors. I look at them every day.

Question is; Did 66 seat belts come with front retractors?  If so, was it dependant on if its a standard or deluxe belt (e.g. standard had no retractor, and deluxe did).

So Phil's answered that deluxe did and standard did not, and Richard's noting his standard do are at odds... can anyone clarify?

(Own a convertible and know retractors don't fit the 65-68's due to larger rocker, thus specifically asking about hardtops)

Yes Charles . They say FOMOCO with the FOMOCO oval logo. They also say patent pending.

I am referring to the plastic housing style, not the clip-ons (which I think were after market items that could be used on convertibles due to the clearance issue Phil noted with standard retractors).

In your initial posting I didn't see anything about the plastic housing style. I thought you asked about seat belt retractors for 1966. The clip on style retractors was sold by FORD over the counter for Mustangs, Falcons and Fairlanes from 1964-1968.  As I stated, the ones on my car say FOMOCO. I don't think FORD considered them aftermarket.

Thanks, yes, thought there might be some mix-up in the styles being discussed.

Believe the clip-on were a dealer item only, don't recall seeing them on a window sticker.  The large floor mounted retractor style were an assembly plant option.

"Clip on" retractors were shown for factory assembled convertibles only, C6ZB-76610A88, and appear to be for the deluxe belt option only (Ref Osborn 1966 Mustang Interior Assembly manual, page 37). Convertibles had their own seat belt part numbers , Fastbacks and Hardtops used the same belts.
A previous discussion determined that 65-66 deluxe belts also included the seat belt warning light.
An interesting note on this drawing, the FOMOCO label was to be on the underside of all belts.

I don't see how the clip on retractors could be used on 1965/66 Mustang convertibles. The convertibles of this time period used a seat belt cover on the out board side of the seat that was approximately 12" long. That only leaves about 6-8 inches to retract. ????????

The Assembly Manual specifies the clip-on is installed 10 inches from the tang on a different belt than the standard.
I strongly suggest you get a set of Mustang Assembly Manuals. Much is explained in them.
