FORD/Thompson Pumps are TEAL?
« on: June 18, 2015, 02:59:42 PM »
I noticed in the FAQ section that it is called out for TRW Power Steering Pumps to be BLACK & Ford/Thompson Pumps Teal blue.

My '67 pump still has a date-correct tag on it:

HBA-BF
  I   F
  6K17B

(actual build date 11/2/66, other power steering parts dated within less than a week of October 17th)

Pump is now painted BLACK and there are NO signs of teal paint underneath. So, if it has been repainted, it must have been stripped maybe? I may have done this during an engine rebuild, I was known to fully strip things like this of paint before repainting.

That is exactly what Ford documentation (TSB articles) and original pumps show. Its not unusual to find on painted black after all these years. Not allot of sources (and allot easier to do in black)  for the teal color over the years.

Likely seen almost 1000 pumps repainted the wrong color over the years by owners and rebuilders

Thank you Jeff, and I assume I read the tag correctly (referring tthe "I F" in the tag's center line mentioned in first post) thus confirming it as a Ford/Thompson pump.

So yesterday, I stripped the black paint off my pump and low and behold...I find some TEAL paint! This must have been one of the first things I changed, probably whenever I rebuilt the engine in '78. I just bumped into this old thread and see I was questioning it. MORE has been revealed over time, just how many changes I did over time, all the while thinking I was leaving it original over the years.  8)  :o :D  ;)

Just an example of why we "question" (in the nicest way possible) long term owners or original owners when they make statements that conflict with our current beliefs. Sometimes the conversation starts is looking/investigating in a new direction sometimes its just poor memory. Though some will put up a pretty good fight/argument to support their memory  :)

Think we all done it whether it’s publically or just in our minds

Just for clarification so that others reading don't get confused, the color Ford blue in this case is used as a memory technique to remember which MFG (TRW or Ford Thompson) was a the teal. Ford blue which typically refers to engine color is not the color the Ford Thompson pumps were painted at the MFG .

Not sure which pump thread to use for this question.

I've seen a number of pump tags with the second line of "I F".
It appears the capital I is more of a Roman numeral "I" than a simple capital letter.
My pump reads "III".
Do we know if this is a revision level or something else?

You may want to double check to confirm you have the correct PS pulley for your application. It is hard to tell from the angle in the picture to be sure.

That color looks like Ford blue, not teal. Teal has a lot more green in it.
Your dipstick on the pump is either the short bent "L" version or broken. Or the photo angle makes it hard to see. NPD has a nice round handle replacement. It should not be painted but bright zinc.

I didn't think the tag got painted, but I'll leave that to others.

The assemblyline dipstick will have instructions stamped into the thumb pull. Shortly after 68 production started it was changed and stamped farther down the shaft. The repros are the later 68 up variety. They are identical except for the printing but wanted to mention the small detail in case it made a difference. Yes the tag is typically attached to the unit when it is painted.

Good to know about the tag, Bob.

Teal can have many, many variations. Here is the one I think of when I hear teal.

The bracket in that pic (and from Fastback 2013) looks painted and I think natural aluminum with no paint or sealer is correct.

In my hand is my bracket, which is just aluminum. I believe this finish, which displays the various aluminum types (new and recycled from trimming) is correct.
