1968 Power Steering Pump Rear Support Bracket
« on: June 18, 2015, 01:55:44 PM »
C8OZ-3C511-C Rear power steering pump support bracket. For 289/302 engines. As promised, here are the two variations on the pressure line support bracket. The Cougars in my yard have had the PS parts removed, no pattern of Dearborn/San Jose or early late. Was hoping to find some intact pumps to correlate the power steering pump data information, no luck. Here are the two brackets, the larger square tipped one I see much less often than the more delicate looking bracket. I can say that the majority of my parted 1968 Cougars are from San Jose.

I wonder if the difference is based on the pump manufacturer. There are two versions used in 68, aren't there? (either TRW or Ford/Thompson). Possible you see a pattern based on that aspect since most of your inventory is from SanJose. Just a thought, no evidence.

I have one of the square end ones. Second photo is the tag from the pump the bracket was on when I got it. Not original to my car, so I do not know which plant it was installed at. Posting here to help contribute data towards the investigation. I will post separately for sale/trade as it does not fit my application.

tag says according to Mustangtek it's for 67-69 Ford, going by the bracket likely from a 289 or 302.

Is that a BLACK painted pump? I ask because it is similar to my pump, excepting the rear bracket. The "F" in the center numbers of the tag is supposed to denote Ford Thompson (using the FAQ guide of this site)

You know, I've always thought it was black, but I never looked at it very closely since it's in the "leftovers" pile. In the photo it does look like a dark teal, and it is very grimy with black oil or steering fluid. It's out of state so I don't have immediate access, but I'm heading that way next month and I will try to remember to determine what color it really is. I've got a long list of parts to examine and retrieve  :D

Ran across some info in an ebay auction. I don't know how accurate it is; it will need some follow-up. The seller ("fastbackstack") had the following description:

Quote
1968 Mustang Cougar Torino Power Steering Pump Hose Indexing Bracket (3 styles in 1968 1969:  This is one of the SHORT STYLES)
Fits a 1968  Ford Mustang Coupe, Convertible or Fastback
Part Number:  1 of 2 shorter styles for 1968  (the 2 short styles are only slightly different)
Date Code:  This kind was found mostly on LATE production 1969 vehicles

Not sure what he means by "three styles" and "short" vs. "long". Perhaps the "long" is the big block bracket and the "short" ones are the two small block ones we've been discussing? And he brings 1969 into the mix. I know we're talking about 68, but was there a change that carried into 69?

This one looks to be for a downward directed pressure hose, I believe the discussion was (loosely) about 68 small blocks brackets which my undersatnding was for the 68's,  the pressure hoses pointed upwards from the pressure port on the back of the pumps. (in line with the filler tube) 351W's were introduced for the 69 model year and I believe the 351W's had a downward pointing pressure hose and if I am not mistaken, the 302's began pointing downwards in 69 model year too. I have no knowledge that there was a changeover late in the 68 model year to have used a downwards pointing pressure hose, possibly others have had different observations.

Richard, I rotated the photo 180 for clarity. The ebay bracket is the same orientation as the left ("square") bracket in Scott's original post - they look to be identical. That doesn't confirm the ebay description, though.  :(

No problem, I should have taken the time to rotate the photo before I posted it. Or maybe the ebay seller should've had the bracket the right direction when he took the photo.  ;D

Finally got a chance to get another shot of the pump. It's teal.

Thanks, I determined by my tag, which has the correct date code on it, that mine should be teal also. I know I re-sealed it at least once, never recalled it being teal though, so I must mave stripped it bare at one time. I liked the look of everything else being black, I imagine that being the reasoning, and changed the original pump to black too! Must have been many-many moons ago! I killed off quite a few brain cels way back in life.
