Topic: 69 Shelby Rear End

Have a 1970, (69) Shelby GT 350. How do I know if it is a 8 inch or 9 inch rear end and if it is a 28 or 31 spline rear end? Are all 69 Shelbys 31 spline 9 inch rear ends?

I'm going to say that all 69 Shelby's came with 9", and as its a GT350 its a 28 spline. If it were a GT500 it might have had a 31 spline as that is what my 69 Mach I 428CJ had. But I am sure there are others here that could give you a better answer. Thats why I love this place!

The 8" and 9" differential/axle housings and axle shaft ends are configured differently.  If still in place the tag will have all the Information. A search in the 69-70 section may help or post a picture and someone will respond ?  This picture is of a 31 spline axle end.  Brian

on a 9 inch you can't acess btm bolts with a socket  - just "google" it.

All 69/70 Gt350's had a 9 inch rear end . 69/70 GT350 had 28 spline rear axles and GT500 had 31. I hope this helps.

Guess the easy DIY would be to look at the restoration thread of the G350 on this site and see if yours matches what was shown in those pictures

Another way to identify the difference is the machined sections/surfaces of the third member housing since you can often get a deep socket on every bolt - just not always perfectly inline with the stud
