I have noticed that New Members often ask questions relating to other topics that have already been discussed at length in other threads. I am sure I also have asked questions that have already been answered elsewhere at this site.

One of the first things I struggled with after joining this site was learning how to navigate or locate such information. I needed to basically train myself how.

Did I miss something? Was my ignorance of navigation within this site unique to me? After a few months, I began getting better at finding things but honestly, I think there are easier ways to learn how then the "drive-by-braille" method I learned to navigate this site with.

I am not a web-designer and no very little about such things so I am NOT offering answers, just asking a simple question:

"COULD there be a training video developed, say with a Youtube link, that might help to train members at least in a tutorial of sorts?" A "Concours Mustang 101" of sorts.

Other people might have better ideas than the one I suggested, but people tend to respond best to video training, even better if there were interactive video training, but that might be too far. Something along these lines might very well might the administrators and/or moderators valuable time in the end.

We hear you Richard and will have to give it some thought - as to how best to explain and convey the information and the best way to resent it.

Organizing information (like my picture collection) can be a challenging task. What is logical and "easy" to one isn't to another.  Might be the left - right brain thing coming into play. We knew from the beginning that if this place took hold there was not going to be any perfect way so we build it with (what we hoped) would be enough categories to cover most of the possible combinations that might follow.  We've added a few since we opened and I would expect that some are still in the future.

Organizing things to a specific year when that was the best fit or in a broader scope (section) when the information spread across later periods of time. In addition we are likely the most detailed and specific (on a regular basis) than any of the other sites.

At the same time I think its just natural for many people to take the easy road and post a question rather than look it up. But maybe with some help, prodding and some addition tools (as you wrote) we can improve this as well as the forum we've all become involved in.

So to begin the project - just a thought - what are the biggest challenges?

Where do I post a question?

How do I find the information I'm looking for?

Why should I always include where my car was built, when it was built and all its options?

Just as an example: In the "Galleries" section, there is a tutorial on "How To Post Pictures" into a gallery. Something along those lines but a bit easier to follow or to "Replay" (persay) it if the tutorial were say in a video form. Those three areas ((in red above) are likely the largest problem areas. That would be a somewhat simpler place to start. Could there be a "suggested to read (watch) these instructions (videos)" offered to new members at the time they sign up? Again, I have no real answers, I'm just wondering if we can improve upon what is already here and I am NOT saying it is exactly "broken" either even though formats are always being improved.

The "perfect" answer I know is not available to just "click here and you will find all your answers". No way to do something like that, but to help bring newer members up to speed quicker is all. I was rather frustrated a few times during the first several months of being a member. Some of the responses I received that didn't make sense at the time, now do make sense but I needed to learn more before they could.

Simply understanding the full concept of doing a concours restoration was new to me at first while repairing cars and doing body work or repainting them was NOT at all new to me. I could easily say that I was highly surprised at how little I knew about my example, even though I had it as a 2nd owner since the late 70's! I cannot imagine how intimidating a concours restoration is for somebody who never was raised working on them as "unmolested vehicles" back in the day. Very few "survivor cars" left.

Thanks for the discussion. Yes its a consent challenge we've experienced in Judging (for example) - how do you address the needs of the beginner while attempting to guide and improve those with allot of past experience.

The forum is a much IMHO easier challenge to address since not all members have to travel exactly the same path or get to the information the same way. I like the "Beginners Guide"  that would at least explain our focus here, and possibly how members or viewers can use the information for their own projects. Maybe even explain why we do the things we do (requiring all that "extra" info" ;) will help others learn/adapt to the format quicker.


Without a doubt many of us growing up in these subjects and spending hundreds of hours (or more) discussing them don't realize how daunting it could be to enter into this world after seeing or expecting what they see on other forums.

Video and sound overs will take a little more effort and time - though it might explain things better to some over the printed word.  Don't have access any longer to a video studio as I did in the past but the toys are easier to get now as is the software and supporting things. Sure no one (other than ourselves  ::) is expecting a professional looking video for this issue.

But bottom line is that it should be worth the effort.

I have some experience with websites and making them more intuitive for those who choose to not read instructions....me included!

As someone with less than a year on this site, the 3 mentioned above seem to be a good starting point.

1. Where do I post? Always wonder if I'll get it right or if Jeff will move it ::)  Recent example was Metuchen driveshaft post. Should it go in Driveline, Metuchen cars or 64 1/2 - 66? I rolled the dice and figured that because other driveshaft posts were in 64 1/2 - 66, that's where I would put it.

2. How do I find the information I need - search a lot, search some more and then ask.  My $0.02

3. Why include plant and build date? - This is learning 101...I have learned more here over the past 10 months than in the previous 30 years....granted my focus was on kids majority of those years. For example, pictures showing the difference between a SJ and Metuchen radiator tank or part changes during production....Hipo motor mounts come to mind...should help to drive the point home.

I have to ask myself the same thing every time I see a post, since I would like to be as consistent as possible. As mentioned in a number of threads.  IF the detail relates to multiple years (example 66-70) then it goes in the individual item areas

Example: A couple of days ago asked about a 67 390 Holley detail. In reading the question it related not to a 67 specific detail but one that spread across all Holley use 67-70 in Mustang applications. For that reason I didn't move it to the 67-68 Section but left it in the Drivetrain sections.

In a different example: Someone posts a question about paint marks on a 66 289 automatic driveline and posts it in the Drivetrain section.  Once the post is read and the focus is clear (not just going by the thread title) I move it to the 65-66 Section since the focus is very specific and answers will be useful to those looking for the exact same information.



2. How do I find the information I need - search a lot, search some more and then ask.

Yes search engines are a tricky thing- What words to use? And on and on. Like most its likely best to start out with allot of related words then search. Then remove a word or two and research.  Sometimes if I remember the author I used their screen name and only one or two words for the first search. Few words produces a bigger "net" but the author narrows it down to a small one again

For anyone that has been on some of the major Mustang forums the asking for specific details before answering questions is a fairly common practice that some of us introduced almost 30 years on the early dial up (before the internet) bulletin boards. People new to the forums rarely realize the importance and the impact of these details in forming the best answer to a question unless that spend allot of time lurking or reading past posts that demonstrate their importance.

Yes some examples for every one of the subjects covered in this lesson/sticky is a must.

Can see members responding to a first post and rather than asking when and where the car was built just post a link to the lesson/sticky   and a "read number #3"   for example :)

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make that new forum member read the FAQ's, unless there's a way to automatically link a new member's sign up to a "short" version of the FAQ's, like including your car's year, month, plant, model, engine and options when a question is asked; point out the "search" feature; pictures, etc. Do this in as few words as possible like -

Welcome to the Concours Mustang Forum.
When you ask a question about your car include: year, month, plant, model, engine and options as these have a lot to do with the answers.
There is a search feature plus a library for members only.
Picture can be attached to your post under "Attachments and other options" on that post.

Most "new members" have had experience on other forums and assume this forum is the same as their old one. In any case, "lurking" is one way to learn.
