70 CJ carbs
« on: June 04, 2015, 12:18:42 PM »
Did any original 70 CJ carbs have a lever operated vented front fuel bowl? Maybe very early cars? My originals do not but the earliest I have is a 994 (4th week of September) date code.

Thanks,

Carl

I've had about a dozen 70 CJ carbs over the years, and no original carbs I've owned ever had the vented front bowl. Off hand I don't know the date of the original carb on my 70, but it was built 9/30/69 and it has no vent. Since this was an emission related change I'd be surprised if any 70 Holley had the vented bowl. It's common to find a vented bowl on pieced together carbs because the non vented front bowl with both inlets threaded is really hard to find and the inlet threads strip easily. If you can find a used dominator, they have 2 of them, but used dominators aren't easy to come by or cheap. New Dominators have an updated bowl that doesn't look the same.

One thing I did notice is that 2 early 70 428 AC cars and several early 70 Boss 302 cars I've seen use the carb solenoid with the spade connector and the small wire like a 69 (mine included). I have a later solenoid with the integral wire to use cause I'm sure no one will believe the 69 style is right ....

I have never seen a 70 carb dated later than Oct 1969. That front bowl is a difficult on to find.

Thanks to all who replied. I was looking (well, looking at pictures anyway) at a 4sp R-code 0F05R100xxx for sale and the carb had the vent on it. But closer examination revealed a rectangular swage on the throttle shaft instead of the original sunburst (my description) swage so I suspect it was a pieced together carb, but probably the original center section.

Interestingly, I have a 4515 4-sp AC carb that is dated 993 even though they didn't make any mustang CJ 4sp AC cars until late in the model year. Guess they must have batch built all they needed in September.

The carb on the 70 green (james bond) cj ragtop date code is 903 & its late feb 70 cj auto a/c car. The only difference I see on 70 a/c  vs. non a/c cj carbs is the idle solenoid & bracket electric vs regular bracket & dashpot making only the baseplate different being 1 threaded hole verses a/c 2 threaded holes for the mounting bracket.

I think Fords parts division ordered a batch of the D0ZF-AC carbs in anticipation of Ford building 4sp AC cars, and we all know how that turned out. I own 2 of these carbs (one is still complete, one I used it's parts to complete an AA carb but I still have the body) and I'm pretty sure they are both 993 dates. I've seen several more in my years of collecting parts so I'm certain there are many more of these carbs than cars they fit. (all 11 of them)

Don't forget the handful(?) of AC / 4-speed Cougars that these would also be original for :-)
