I'd like to know if anyone has pictures of the undercarriage and engine bay of a 65 Coupe that was built in NJ that's been restored.


65 Mustang A Code, 4 spd, 4 brl,
Raven Black exterior
Red deluxe pony interior

Looks like red-oxide undercarriage at Metuchen around that time.

Has your car already been stripped to bare metal?  Always best to find original samples and color match for best representation.

The one thing I've learned is that d not assume a restored car was done correctly.  Look for some unrestored examples.

Mark nicely put. I think i'm really just looking for something that looks close to correct. Just think My son is 4 by the time he's 16 and takes the car out a few time (you know the rest of the story) plus he'll one day own my 14 other mustangs

I'd like to know if anyone has pictures of the undercarriage and engine bay of a 65 Coupe that was built in NJ that's been restored.

The "restored" wording is the reason for me not responding since I don't collect (on a regular basis) pictures or data from restored cars so can't help in that way.

For undercarriage - originally you have

- No sealer applied to the bottom side of the car to the bare metal.

- Next (normally) a strong deep reddish brown epoxy primer applied

- Typical overspray (like every other plant) from the exterior body color paint. More on the outer surfaces (leaving a small/slight shadow behind the pinch welds)  and panels that hang downward. Fading away as it gets closer to the center of the car. Original cars will typically have at least twice (or more)  as much overspray as you find on restored cars from my observation

- Over this you have the overspray from the engine compartment and front wheel well application of the black paint at the front of the floor boards. Alos along the sides (front wheel well to rear valance attachment point at the rear)  to a lesser degree normally than the body color

- Rocker to floor pan seam sealer is applied like the original. No sealer at seat belt anchor brackets. Can't recall at the moment if the trunk drops received a strip of sealer or not.

- Of course the body has been sitting on the dolly during the whole process producing the 8 bare spots on the frame rails (showing the original galvanized finishes on the metal surface as well as the four pass through attachment points in the interior and trunk area.

Not allot of good pictures are available of early NJ cars due to the poor conditions we find most original cars in :(


- Engine compartment black was applied to fully cover the engine compartment, the radiator support (front and rear) as well as the front wheel wells from approx rear splash shield attachment point (not installed at the time) to the other side - same point.



As you progress past the painting stage we should be able to help with specific details.
