69 GT side stripe, reflective or not?
« on: May 22, 2015, 04:48:28 PM »
I was reading http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=6127.0, '69 GT Stripe locations, and noticed that they made a reference to reflective strips.   There seems to be two style: reflective and non-reflective.   I'd like to know what's correct.

By chance, I happen to have a small body piece with the 69 red stripe on it, and it seems to be reflective.  The old part I have I a section behind the door, below the 69 side scoop.  In addition, it seems to be sized different from the current stripe kit.   It may be that this sample is wrong, and the stripe kits are correct,

On the sample i have, the stripe consists of a two small stripes, and a large stripe.  The small stripe on the body is 1/4", the wider is 1 7/8".  On the strip kit, the small strip is 5/16, and the wider is 2".

In addition the strip on this body part seems to be higher than where the the other post described:  1/4" above the door line.  The body panel is likely from a mach 1, where the stripe is mounted higher.    Are these the mach1 stripe dimensions?   Is the GT strip size different?

My 69 GT had a plain white stripe(s). My 69 Mach 1 had a two tone reflective, and my 69 Shelby GT 350 has (or will have again) a gold reflective stripe.
Accurate looking but not a Concours Restoration/build. See my build photo gallery at 69GT350 Hertz Build

There was a point in very early 69 when 3M was having problems with the reflective strip production (all stripe production). But unfortunately I never got a copy of the letter describing the problem and the date of the letter. Would choose at this point the reflective

Back in the mid 90's when I first got Jack Brooks Cj convert GT to restore, the stripes were gold and reflective. His car was built in mid jan 69 if I remember correctly.  In the hand full of GT's I have seen Gold is the only reflective I have seen.  My GT is solid white.
