Topic: Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Hi
My oil pressure gauge has suddenly stopped working.
Thought I would start the repair process with a replacement Sending Unit.
At the moment I have a standard looking Bell Shaped unit as part of the filter housing.
Not too many big blocks here in Australia however easy to purchase small block Cleveland parts.
Guidance on interchange or a part number for the 428 would be appreciated.

Since you refer to it as a Gauge, and describe the sending unit as bell shaped, it sounds like you are describing the part in the picture below. I believe that they are the same from 1965 to 1985 in Ford cars and trucks that use a gauge.

A simple test would be to have an assistant sit in the car with the ignition switch on, watching the gauge, while you provide a ground to the lead that attaches to the sending unit (Just a few seconds is enough). If the gauge needle moves, the sending unit is likely bad. If nothing happens, the problem is in the gauge, or the wiring to it.

The Dearborn bell shaped oil pressure senders had a makers mark of FOMOCO in block letters in a rectangle (not script or in a oval) . Other plants may have similar.

I think you have this backwards.  Grounding the sending unit makes the gauge peg high.  That checks the wiring and the gauge itself.  If it pegs high, then the sending unit is at fault.  If it does not peg high, then the gauge and/or the wiring is bad.

My car doesnt have the gauge, i mistakenly bought an NOS Autolite unit never installed. If you need one, give me a shout. I have lots of 69 parts, that no worky on my 70

Not an easy fix with AC and PS.
