Trans colour
« on: May 01, 2015, 07:47:26 AM »
I just got my trans back from the shop and the bloke painted the whole thing black.
What do I do to get it looking original?
Is there a paint I can use.
It's a 67 fastback c6

You'll be stripping the whole thing :(

Is there a paint - not really any paint will make it look painted since it will have the "modeled" look of bare freshly cast aluminum and freshly machined surfaces. Monotone

What about the covers and pan? Are they also natural or painted?

I just had my C4 rebuilt and the transmission case came back stripped and clean, it looks pretty good. But the two side covers and pan are painted black, they look good as well, but I don't think that is correct.

All of the Ford automatic transmissions were natural metal (aluminum, steel, iron) in finishes. The only painted part was the inspection cover plate for access to the flex plate and torque converter. So your servo covers and pan should be bare steel or bare aluminum.

Thank you Dudly your pictures are a great help. Your car is wonderful as a reference to what an original car should be.

Here are some photos of my 69 FMX Before and After a rebuild. The pan is bare steel as seen HERE. I cleaned up the cast iron case with de-greaser and a scrub brush and all the factory markings stayed on, so I left it that way. The aluminum bell housing and tail shaft got scrubbed with wire brushes and wheels and left natural aluminum. The steel pan was cleaned but discolored from the rust so it was painted with Dupli-Color's Steel colored paint.
Accurate looking but not a Concours Restoration/build. See my build photo gallery at 69GT350 Hertz Build
