Special DSO

I just purchased a 1966 Mustang Coupe. The warranty plate indicates a special order exterior paint which I believe is the Thunderbird Blue. The DSO # is 712108. Does anyone know what that number means?

71 should be los angeles dso. 2108 i believe is the 2,108th special order from that district.

++1  Just a form number - Ordering district plus the number from the upper left hand corner of the ordering form


Unfortunately Ford didn't keep records of what (in special paint examples) color they painted these cars. As discussed in other threads it would have been listed on a form placed in an envelope in the glove box at time of delivery, bottom of the build sheet and on those cars built with buck tags on them.

Guessing by "Thunderbird Blue" your referring to Sapphire Blue - the same used on 66 Shelby's. Have seen at least two other 66's special ordered with the same color. Possibly influenced by seeing the color on a Shelby once those hit the street. Was the car built after Feb 66?

Just as a barely related note :)

 Years ago I bought a 65 fastback with the DSO of 710001. First special order car in southern calif. Always figure the dealer did the order just to get one of the first fastbacks produced (move to the front of the line)

No blank paint code (blue on blue car) , 6 cylinder, automatic with nothing ( that I could ever find) that made it unusual - other than the compass option that had likely been added at the dealer

Only had it for a few weeks before I cut it into pieces

You don't want to know how many I (or we've all) been guilty of sending off to the car crusher! Working at a junk yard mid-70's through mid 80's I've seen my fair share go away  :'( even NEW prototypes...but the most difficult one to watch go away was the '70 B-9er! Engine scabbed before it arrived at the yard...but it was a 10K mile car in '75 or '76

I'm guilty of a few myself. Parted out a half-dozen 67-68s back in the 80s. They were WI rustbuckets, and I took every part, and literally every nut, bolt and screw off them first. There was nothing left of them of any value. But I still felt bad watching the rusted piles of sheetmetal get hauled away. It helps my conscience to know some of those parts went into other cars, and a few miscellaneous fasteners will make their way into my '68.

The dozens if not hundreds or more that I had access to in the 70's and 80's...I regularly took what was THEN of value...and back then (I thought) I knew EVERYTHING valuable about the Mustangs...I really hadn't a clue... I could be a millionare twice over if I REALLY knew anything at all!

A 1965 I6 had a spoiler?  Now that would be quite rare if it was OEM.
