66 Shock Tower Brace
« on: April 17, 2015, 09:00:06 PM »
Hello, I have a 66 K code. In relation the the shock tower is it correct that the supports from the firewall to the towers are the two piece type. I understand that some cars were also fitted with a one piece for export and an export brace. Mine has an export brace,  howeve very sure that is aftermarket.. thanks Greg

The 1965/66 K Code bodies in the engine compartment are just like any other 1965/66 Mustang. (two piece braces ) The 1965 & 66 Shelby Mustangs came with the export brace. I think the Monte Carlo Bar was a Shelby option that could be added to any 1965/66 Mustang.

The export package typically consisted of more then the one piece brace. The export cars that got the brace whether Mustang or GT350 also had a added support bracket welded at the cowl that was covered with seam sealer which made it not very noticeable. The upper shock brackets were reinforced where the shocks bolted down with a welded on washer at the bolt holes. A adjustable heavy duty shock was also part of the package. Koni's were used or a FOMOCO made by Gabriel adjustable shock. It was common relative speaking because Shelby's had them . Not so common on some export Mustangs.

Also if the brace itself is one from the period the bolt holes at the firewall end of the export brace will be evenly spaced rather than unequally

Bob, Jeff and Richard

Gents thanks for your advice which is much appreciated. Looks like this car had the heavy duty setup, now to find some shocks to suit.

Thanks

This was not the heavy duty suspension package but the export package - your door tag (90-99 DSO) would also indicate that it had been an export car.
