Quick help
« on: April 15, 2015, 05:33:11 PM »
I am about to purchase a set of exhaust manifolds and I am noticing my 428 CJ (c8 block) has 16 holes near the manifold holes. But these manifolds date c8 are showing only standard 8? But on the 428CJ Registry it says 16 on 68-70 had 16? Are the other holes used for emissions? Thanks

I suggest you go back to the CJ Registry and read up on cylinder heads.   The C8 only means 1968 nothing else.  The correct heads for a CJ 428 are the 6090-N version.  The correct exhaust manifolds for that head have a unique bolt pattern.  So... probably not the ex manifolds you need.  Brian

Thanks for the info, yes I understand what the c8 stands for was just trying to explain the year of both. I know my motor and heads are original out of a 69 428CJ R-Code. All I'm wanting to know is is there four exhaust manifold bolts per port that hold the exhaust manifold on? Thanks again

Cool that's what I obviously have on my engine but have a very cool older gentleman that just sold his no kidding 100% concours 68 GT500KR and he has a lot of 428 CJ parts and I was buying these manifolds from him but they only have 8 holes. Just strange he seems to know his stuff but says he is unfamiliar with the 16 bolt exhaust manifold for the 428CJ. Additionally when I look them up on the internet besides the registry I see 8 bolt holes, even on the new repops..just strange. But thanks a lot for the help!

No, 2 bolt pattern on the ex manifolds.   The engineering number would help to identify them.  Brian

Sorry didn't mean to be confusing.  Ex manifolds are a two bolt per port affair or eight holes total per manifold.  Eng. numbers are quite helpful.  The passenger side also should have a spacer.  Brian

Also where my motor is this is the best pic I can get right now. But if it only needs the two bolts why the four holes?

Well things are looking pretty good.  The Right side is probably 9430-D and the Left should be 9431-B maybe A or H.  The spacer, for the Right, is missing ?  You have one lift hook got another ?  Looks like it was a good day.  Brian

And yes Brian they do both have the exact numbers you typed, but I don't have a spacer, I'll have to look into that but for the money I'm happy thanks for all the help! Still not sure why the extra holes in the heads but I'm cool if you pros say they are correct!! Thanks again!! Shane
