C code 289 engine dress up
« on: March 27, 2015, 09:32:48 PM »
Good evening,
Attached are a few pic's of my C code 289 engine compartment.  Is this an accurate representation of the 289 engine dress up kit?  'Am I missing anything?  Chrome oil dipstick?

thanks,
Matt

Either I really stumped everyone or this is a dumb question.  Any thought's, suggestions, observations?

Someone double-check me, but I'm pretty sure the chrome dipstick was part of the kit.  It looks like the only part of the kit that you're missing (looks like the radiator cap is chrome, which it should be for the dress up package).

-Chrome valve covers
-Open element chrome air cleaner
-Chrome dipstick
-Chrome oil cap
-Chrome radiator cap
Too much junk, too little time.

Yes, chrome dipstick part of over-the-counter kit (not part of hi-po factory dress-up though).  There supposedly was not a chrome cover for disc brakes, only drum.

Probably ought to get the period-correct air filter element like used on hi-po cars.

I believe if you got the 289 chrome Dress-Up option that it would use a different rounded domed "chromed" oil cap.

The chromed oil cap that you have (I believe) is just a modern "Scott Drake" chromed version of the original "Black Cap" oil cap.

I don't think that back in the 60's that a "Chromed" version of the Standard "Top Hat" Black cap was available.  I'd like to see one in a NOS package.. Until now, I have not.

I think that if you wanted a "Chromed" oil cap. You would have to settle for the rounded, domed "chromed" oil cap that was available over the Ford Parts counter.

MCA Judges, Please check me on this..

Thanks,

Tony, the oil filler cap I have is NPD item #: 6766-5 non-emission, push-on type.  It has a rounded edge to it but the top surface is flat, and you're probably right it's just the chromed version "top hat" one.  I think I need the chrome cap that requires the grommet NPD item #: 6766-17C?  But it's weird that it's only priced at $2.65 in their catalog.  I don't know.

Also, as "Just" a thought.  If you use the Chrome Valve covers,  There are nice "289 V" Valve Cover decals that you can put on both valve covers.  They are really nice and available in Reproduction.  I see them on a lot of "restored" Hi-Po motors and cars with Engine Dress-up kits.  I have no idea on their originality and IN NO WAY accept them as Concours before I get blasted here..lol...   They are however cool as heck looking and I believe that they were originally meant for specific 289 applications.. but may not be Concours correct for this specific (Mustang) application.. Still cool!

I thought the group might want a look at them..
