69 spare tire size

Hello i am wondering if i have the right size tire on my spare.

I converted the F70 R14 to metric size at http://tire-size-conversion.com/tires/Ford/Mustang/1969/5-Lug/

and came up with the following tire to be the correct size :205/75R14
So i ordered this tire and placed the wheel with tire in the trunk.

What i find strange is the distance between the center of the weel and the location of the eye to hook on to. In the picture you can see the hook makes a angle. it looks a bit strange to mee. I did not have a spare tire in the trunk before so i don't know if this is correct. The hook also seems a little bit short to also fixate the jack onto.




So is 205/75R14 the correct tire size or not ??

Of course its not the "correct" size, its simply something close in the modern measurement system. Not sure why you choose the 75 series tire since that will change things also.  Conversions sites I found suggested 205/70R14 Diameter right around 25.3 inches. The site you found looks like it just suggests a tire size for the type of car rather than a straight conversion from one size to another.

Add to this that each tire company's tires will be slightly different in over all size/diameter from one another. Plenty of different conversions out there on the web - to add to the confusion. Even found some that contradicted themselves depending on what conversion tool you used on the site. Would suggest that you use overall measurements of the specific tire brand to make your choice

Easy to see by the angle of the J hook that this version of the conversion size is larger/taller.  IMHO

Is there a chance that when you flip the wheel and tire over your J hook will allow for jack to pass through and sit in the tire.   THere are multiple ways of jack mounting - per the various trunk lid stickers.   I THINK you need to flip over.

I believe the jack goes under the tire and flip the tire over (valve stem down). I place the J-bolt through the nearest lug bolt hole and the jack handle goes on top. Per 69 owner's manual.

Appears that it depends depends if you look at the jack/spare instructions. Still will not address the extreme angle of the J hook

I also found out that it is not easy to find a good conversion website. The diameter of a 205/70R14 is about 1"smaller than the 205/75R14. With a 205/70R14 the wheel will move more to the richt causing the hook be at a more straight angle. I doubt however that the hook will be straight down with that size.

So probably a difficult question to answer

F40x14 converting to metric ???

Maybe with the jack underthe tyre, my wheel-tire combination will fit. I hope i have the right jack instruction ;D

I recently built a spare for my 70 Mach 1 and ran into the exact same problem, then I logged on and saw this OLD thread.  As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter if the wheel is upside down, or right side up, or if you put the jack under or on top of wheel. The J-hook will still have an extreme angle. Yes, it's better if you put the J-hook through a lug hole, which is what I ended up doing. This just looks like on of those Ford quality control issues that didn't get worked out for a full size spare. Obviously this problem goes away if you have a Space Saver spare.

Anybody disagree with my findings?

Make sure you have the proper J hook bolt mount. The J hook bolt mount location is different on the 69 (and other years?) if you have a full size vs inflatable spare. The full size the mount is over the edge of the trunk floor next to the gas tank where the inflatable is almost in line with the rear bumper mount. The inflatable bracket also includes the attachment for the inflator bottle.

Some examples . May not all be stored as original but does address angle of the rod. All look like they only have a small angle using the large center hole as indicated in the jacking instructions. Sure different sized aftermarket tires make allot of difference
