68 Special Order Paint unit
« on: March 22, 2015, 06:42:34 AM »
I have a 68 with DSO 71 and special order unit 0780 but no paint code.

Does the marti report explain the significant of the SOU 0780 and will it list the original paint code.

Anyone know this SOU?

It sounds to me like you might have a "Rainbows of Colors" car that were sold for the '68 and '69 model years.
You might try a "search" here at this site In the 1967-68 as well as the 69-70 catagories, possibly the internet for Rainbow of Colors Mustangs.

I found 7080 as a Moss Green Ditzler paint code number 43821, I did not see 0780 in the list (typo maybe?)
IF it is a R.O.C. Mustang and you have do have an 0780 number, yours might be unique. If so, you might do a color search on areas of the car that usually never get repainted and do not fade with sun exposure and have that area scanned to get a color match. It would be nice to see such pictures of the color your car was built with too.

I'm sure others will help out with these questions here at Concours.

Oh, and WELCOME!

I sent Kevin Marti a turn signal housing from my '68 when I ordered my report. He matched the color in a Special Paint book. He's the one who put me on the trail of the R.O.C. promotion. Once you know your color code, visit mustangattitude as Tim suggested. John Klein runs that site and has a ton of info on the R.O.C. promotions. He sent me the reference sheet that he made. He made chips with actual paint that he purchased new (not vintage chips).

Wild guess - is your build date "16B"?

Thanks for the welcome.

Bingo, the build is 16B.

The DSO is definitely 710780.   I looked at the mustang attitude website.  There is a SOU 710778 followed by a 710782.

Does the marti report mention anything about the promotion or paint code?

If Kevin is confident that he has a correct match for the code, he will indicate it as shown on the clipping from my report. He has to match to a sample - the Ford data does not contain special order paint info. Also note that ROC cars were ordered as "STOCK", which means the dealer picked the color and ordered the car for display. If a cutomer ordered a special paint color, the order type would be "RETAIL", or possibly "FLEET" if they ordered a quantity of vehicles in a special color.

Rochard, the 0780 GGBAAS refers to is the order number that's part of the DSO. His DSO code reads "710780". Mine is "710784" - Los Angeles district, order #0784. Orders could and often did contain more than one vehicle, so this code is not necessarily unique to that vehicle, and does not convey any information about the paint that was used.

You're quite welcome. As you find out more about your car, please post it. As an ROC "brother" (or "sister"), I would really like to learn more about the ROC cars. Two recommendations: 1) get a Marti report and 2) Send your info to John Klein so he can add it to the ROC database.

I continue to learn every day, actually, I hoped you would see this post since you have one too! I was happy to see another one show up.

I've learned a LOT since I started following these forums. And there's a lot more to learn yet! This is one of the few topics where I feel somewhat knowledgeable.  :)

I ahven't searched the forums yet for ROC-specific info. If I don't find much, perhaps I should start a thread that others can build on.

First welcome to the site.

Looking through my data base I found at least one other car built under the same DSO that was part of the Rainbow sale, Color of the Month, Rainbow Colors ... or what ever the dealer choose to call the promotion ;) Looks to be a the "orange"  color. The color was available many years just under different names.

Not a completely stock car but hopefully they repainted it in a similar shade of what originally was there.

You'll find some info on this spring promotion in the Library section of this site -  under 68 Mustang - Paint Colors. Showing some of the original ads used by dealers. Also there are a number of prior threads discussing Special Order Paint cars here on the site

Have owned a number of Special order paint cars - just never choose to own one from one of the spring promotions - just individual order cars

Again welcome

Hi Jeff, Just to confirm, you have one other car with DSO 710780 in your data base, and this was a ROC promotional program car?  Is the other car a FB?

Yes as written same DSO as yours.

Don't know if it was part of different color spring promotion but it was in the same order as yours. Don't have Marti reports for most of the tens of thousand pictures I have ;)

Is the other car a FB?

No it's a coupe - it's the one pictured in my post above.

Have coupes, convertibles and fastbacks all that same color - just different orders and possibly different promotions. or individual car orders.

Might find some more from the same group - there was a newsletter (back before the internet) was focused on Special Order Paint cars. But the editor stopped publishing those many years ago. Know he did at least one edition with the Color of the Month, Rainbow....... promotion as the feature.

Contributed to that effort were and when I could

Hello, I hope it's ok to jump on this thread, but I beleive I  have a R.O.C. car also. I just found this out when prepping for a new paint job. My DSO # is 721191 with a build date of 16B. It's unit # is 139407. We found some virgin paint during disassembly and it appears to be Madagascar Orange. Is there any way to verify the color, and how many painted this color? Also, are these cars any more valueable than non R.O.C. cars? I do intend to contact John Klein/Mustang Attitude also. Any more info/help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
