1970 Shelby GT 350 Paint
« on: March 13, 2015, 12:36:33 AM »
Hi,

I'm new to this forum and need a little guidance. I'm restoring a 1970 Shelby GT 350 I just purchased and would like to know :

1. if the trunk is supposed to be all body color (minus the fuel tank) or black?
2. what color the underside of the Shelby front hood is supposed to be?  Body color or black?
3. Is there a paint product for the satin black engine compartment that matches factory or do I have to get a specific formula mixed?
Car was built in June of 69 in Dearborn plant.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

The trunk is body color . the underside of the hood is black with a soft line of body color that varied about a inch from the edge. The sheen of the engine bay varied somewhat so no absolutes. It is the semi gloss sheen in the middle of the spectrum of what is found. With that said most have the paint product mixed to desired sheen. I hope this helps.

If you use the search feature you'll find a number of threads showing a restoration I did a few years back with lots of pictures. This might help

One of the many

Jeff,

In reviewing the link you provided above on the Black Jade Shelby I need some clarification please. The photo showing the driver side front inner fender view with the shock tower in red oxide; You mention above the photo series body color more forward and rearward. My car is a June 12 Dearborn car. I know the area of the cowl and side of cowl area including jams is body color. In my case Wimbledon white. Is the inner fender to the red oxide shock tower body color, ie. in my case white? No satin black in that region ??

Thank you

Typically the inner fender panel on both sides received body color on the top and side of the cowl as well as the firewall section of the inner fender area. The body color was applied up to and on the inner fender panels between the firewall section and the shock tower area - may be further forward on some examples.  In some cases the painter could extend the amount of body color up to and into the shock tower area - just depends on how much attention he was paying at the time or how much effort he was putting out.

Only semigloss black that might be in the area behind the shock tower area and over the body color and/or red oxide would be light overspray that passed through the fender bolt openings, or from paint being applied to the fender lip above.

Not easy to find pictures since on Mustangs sound deadener was applied over all of this obscuring the view and details

White exterior car - ignore the area with sound deadener over it (firewall section and torque box

Red car - unfortunately not allot of great contrast between the red oxide and the body color

Grabber green Shelby - One of the further forward body color examples - into the shock tower depression

We always loose the light overspray and some detail through the cleaning process

Hope this helps
