'65 Mustang K code "Race Car"
« on: March 11, 2015, 01:25:04 AM »
Hi all,

I haven't seen a car with a cross ram intake with two 4-bbl carbs for sale before.  The seller purports the car to be a "1965 Ford Mustang GT K Code Factory Race Car".  It has a buck tag since it's a Jersey built car which doesn't have PIO stamped so it's not a factory GT but it's clearly a K Code car prepped for racing (by someone).  The seller doesn't offer any proof that it's a factory race car.  The intake appears to have Edelbrock stamped on the lower left hand side of the picture of the intake.  Have any of you seen a car like this before?

The door tag is a repo, isn't it? Note the "G" in the corner.

... or the "PI stamp" is hidden under the fender (row 5 on the buck tag)?

Warranty Tag looks legit to me. All fonts and spacing seem correct, as well as the patina. Looks undisturbed. I've observed the "G" on many original tags

I have Metuchen built factory GT manufactured near this car's scheduled build date.  The Metuchen used PIO to denote a GT during that period in '65.  PIO would have been stamped on the buck tag on the same row as "V8" (just to the right of "V8" and below the VIN).  In addition, the VIN door tag from Metuchen in this period is normally grey not Black - so I still question whether the door tag is an original.

Some of the parts do look original and old such as the seats/interior, hardware around doortag, even the reminance of the "hold down plates" sticker behind rear tag. But, it looks like an off -the -showroom car that was converted for racing early on. The patina/age/rust on the valve covers and aluminum intake show that. Maybe not worth 30k in my book but would be a good car to restore none the less. Does look like the front end has been replaced, maybe with fiberglass fenders and hood?? Can't miss the hacked electrical/ ignition set-up either. ;)

The door tag does look legit IMO. Probably a real K, but not a "factory race car". Whether it's a real GT or not does little to affect the value given all the other issues. Absolutely no documentation of what K items are still on the car. Does it still have the original block/engine, heads, transmission, rear end, etc? A lot of "value" is undocumented. K items that it's obviously missing are the intake, carb, distributer, fan, fan spacer, etc. Why would anyone replace the fan with a clutch type fan for racing purposes? This car was previously in a Craigslist ad that was flagged for removal. Both the seller and the high bidder have 0 feedback. I love the statement "No rust on the car". Caveot emptor!

I can't dispute that; I'm still learning details about door tags. Seems there are a couple of different versions for '65. But I'm still suspicious of the tag because the driver's door does not match the rest of the car. If the door was replaced and the tag transplanted to the new door, they sure did a good job of not scratching it up in the process. Ultimately I suppose it doesn't matter whether it's an original tag or not, as there's nothing on it to support the "factory race car" story.

Condition sure does bring into question the original mileage claim.  Really is irrelevant I suppose.

Would be an interesting car to look at, noticed a big hole in rad support, previous supercharger install?

I'm thinking back in that era it would have more likely been for some sort of ram air / cold air system.

I thought this "looked" familiar. This was discussed on the Hi-Po forum in February -
