67 Smog Intake Canister and Hoses
« on: March 03, 2015, 01:00:37 PM »
Hey there!
I had some questions on the smog system on a 1967 Mustang Fastback GTA S Code San Jose built and a build date of December 1966.
Should the Smog Air Intake Canister strap and wing nut be cadmium plated and the bracket and canister semi gloss black?
Also would there be a point deduction for using donor hoses to complete the smog system?

Thanks for all your help,
Travis Waters

Can lid and wing nut were originally painted as a unit. The paint didn't stick as well to the plated wing nut so often after all these years there is little left. Sort of like what happens to the master cylinder lids

Also would there be a point deduction for using donor hoses to complete the smog system?

In judging it depends on the class. If in Concours Trailer or Driven the judges should ignore the ink markings on hoses and the owners should make an effort to remove any incorrect - distracting markings so it will not tempt a judge to deduct.  Just make sure the ends are cut as they would have been originally, the hose looks and is shaped like the original one.

The strap is the same color as the unit (everything on that canister is semi gloss black)?

Thanks again,
Travis

No its zinc dichromate in look and finish. Wasn't attached to the can when painted though allot of cars had them painted by owners over time. Clamp is not used through the whole year - depends on when the car was built, a result of all running changes effecting the Thermactor system

Does anyone know what size the bolts were to mount the canister to the shock tower. Also, were the nuts on the back or was the shock tower threaded?

Thanks
Travis

No bolts were used - instead two hex headed screws were used to attach.

Will see if I have a clear picture and maybe a head mark

I'll bet the info you're looking for is in the forum's Library under Mustang Hardware Spreadsheets for 67 and 68 and can be see in the file sorted by application.

Jeff, when the word strap is used in this context is this the bracket that holds the air filter canister to the fire wall that is zinc dichromate ?

"holds the air filter canister to the fire wall that is zinc dichromate"

Holes the filter to the passenger shock tower bracket or to another bracket depending on when the car was built

And yes the finish of the clamp was zinc dichromate

Same as the strap and the nut- zinc dichromate

Yes it's a hex head with a standard slot

Ps moving the thread since it really has nothing to so with MCA or Judging
