Mustang #1 Henry Ford Engines Revealed Exhibit
« on: February 23, 2015, 05:41:49 PM »
I stopped in at the Henry Ford Museum today to check out the "Engines Revealed" exhibit and took some photos of Mustang #1. They rarely open the hood. I am sure most of you have seen photos in articles written about the car or seen it first hand, but I thought I would share my photos with you all. The pics are not all that great, but maybe someone will find some use or info within them, or just enjoy looking at them.

I can't tell but is the block painted silver or just the front half?  I know when I was there last year at the Ford Museum the hood was closed... :(

Looks like it is silver, hard to tell. The front cover and water pump look like they are silver for sure....The grill is a very light shade of argent blue too. That is what I noticed first.

Consider that it's an 05C pre-prod car, so likely to be some weird things here and there that don't jive with normal production line cars... at least once they got going after a while.

Thanks for the pics!

I saved a couple of pictures from a Mustang Monthly article on-line before the website changed, the article is still available to view, the pics are as high quality as before so I've attached them.

Looks like it's silver in most areas... hard to tell on the sump, possibly covered in dirt/grime...

So being that the block, water pump and timing cover were painted silver, would the by pass hose also be painted silver as well? Also the oil pan looks black, unless that is a lot of dirt covering it...

To me it dosn't look like the engine was painted silver. It looks like they over cleaned it and knocked a lot of loose black paint off of it. I still see a lot of black paint especially on the shot with them reinstalling the motor. The "silver" looks like cast iron and aluminum . I would have to inspect it in person before I would believe silver paint.

Most of the original paint on the front cover and water pump of my November 64 A code SJ Car came off during cleaning. The rest of the block held the paint better.

ok so what happend to the mustang Tucker got in exchange?  that would be an interesting car too...

"The company would build Mustang No. 1,000,001 to Tucker's exact specifications, and fit it with whatever options he wanted, in exchange for 001. He relented, swapping his car for a new '67 with special features that included a built-in television set."

It looks like the engine was steam cleaned. I steam cleaned a 65 "C" code in 2012 and most of the paint on the water pump and timing cover came off. The car was extremely dirty and it took an hour to get it started, too much steam.

Yes, From what I know, The block was not rebuilt or anything when they removed the engine, They just removed the heads, replaced the water pump, and replaced all replaceable seals and gaskets without actually rebuilding the block.  Basically, It just got a big clean-up and new gaskets without a major re-build though they did pull they engine.  The car had literally not been run in 31 years. That was back in 2003.

It has been run/driven at least once in the past 10 or so years.  Believe at the 40th anniversary show I remember an article was written around then that talked about them preparing the car and observations from driving.

I read that too, or that's what I thought I read too but wasn't sure THIS was the same car I read about for sure.
