1967 PROTECTION GROUP
« on: February 22, 2015, 08:59:07 AM »
Today I was looking through these pages and came across a RPO (regular production option) package I hadn't noticed before for the 67's.

https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/2013/11/18/1967_Mustang_Specs.pdf

It is called the "Protection Group" and included Color keyed floor mats, door edge moldings and front/rear license frames. I had been under the belief these were dealer installed or dealer available accessories until now.

Does anyone possibly have pictures of these RPO options? (as apposed to the dealer available accessories)

Richard

I do not believe that there is any difference between them.  In the RPO option they were just sold as a group.
I have a set of the door edge guards if you are interested.

I do already have a set of NOS door edge moldings too, thanks for offering. I was curious what the floor mats and the license frames looked like. These sound like something I would have wanted had I bought a new 67 Mustang. I would only install items such as these if they were original parts or looked correct on the car.

Does anybody reproduce a close match of these items?

I am not sure what the original license frames looked like but the reproduction rubber floor mats are close to the originals.

I am not sure what the original license frames looked like

Depends on which ones were in stock at the dealer or were included in the trunk with the car

Here are a few versions - Earlier C2  Rotunda and the later FoMoCo one

the reproduction rubber floor mats are close to the originals.

As shown in other threads - depends on what version. Most of the styles aren't reproduced

I bought a set of the Drake "Running Horse" floor mats and compared to images of NOS of the same, they seem to be fairly good knock-offs and have a "licenced by Ford" product label on the vinyl packing they arrived inside.

License Frames, and looking at the pictures Jeff posted. It looks like the earlier Rotunda one pictured (first image below) are the correct ones, correct? This is if these were included as an RPO as an item included in the "Protection Group". The later FoMoCo version seems to be more of a later variety, going by my limited research on license frames.

I bought these license frames, Rotunda installation kit instructions dated 1966.

Best I could come up with for if nothing else, a dealer installation.

Nice find today ;) My sister gives me a call from the local "GOODWILL" store and asks if I am interested in a pair of Mustang Floor mats. (yeah, it sounded that way to me too at first) She gave a basic description over the phone and I had her text me an image since they were only $16.

Turns out to be a NOS set of the same "Running Pony" type I had already bought a Drake reproduction set over a year ago...but now I have FoMoCo on the backs :)

No packaging but they look to have been unused since a quick glance over reveals no issues whatsoever.

Every now and again God gives me a neat little nudge like this ;) 8)

I'll finish cleaning them up and post a picture alongside the new Drake set I have. We see how close the repops are to the "real deal". I believe they are remarkably the same.

Great to hear you've got family members "trained" to keep an eye open. I have to buy pizza for lunches at shops to keep an eye open for me   ::)

OK, I am really impressed now with the Drake reproductions...but YES, there are very noticeable, slight differences.

!.) Details of the horse logo are much crisper on a FoMoCo set. A difference noticed in the mane, the tail and the overall depth of the image is more pronounced on the FoMoCo item. The horse just looks STRONGER!
2.) The grain in the imitation vinyl around the horse is much more vivid on the FoMoCo set
3.) The mat itself seems to be a much more dense rubber, thicker overall i think. (I didn't weigh them)

Otherwise, since with my project will be an ocaasionally driven car, I will more than likely use the reproduction set most of the time and store the others for maybe only very special occasion.

Good find on the Mats Richard. I was going to mention that I have both a Repo set from the 80's and an NOS set of them. Main difference is in the FoMoCo on the originals.

Now, on the License Plate Frames; there are two listed in the January 1967 MPC (first image attached), and then three in the Accessories Section of the 1960-68 MPC, the sheet is dated June 1968 (second image attached). So, as Jeff mentioned, I guess it depends on what was "laying around" as to what was included, as all are correct depending on when  the car was built. On the second type that Jeff pictured in the FoMoCo box, back in the late 70's, I too was skeptical of this type being later as I had seen this type on many Fords during the 70's.  Then I came across an NOS one in Rotunda packaging with the C7 number (Jeff's box just must be a later issue of the same part).
I agree with Marty that the RPO Protection Group  was just a packaging of three already available Accessories.

I have shown also below, pictures of the three different License Plate Frames for your info.

Bob, Thank you the additional images and MPC references.

I've obtained a pair of the C7 version including all of the clips required to attach then to the plates.

My understanding about this particular RPO's components (Regular Production Option ~door edge guards, floor mats & license frames), none of these items would likely be considered Concours if actually "installed" on a car (particularly in a Thoroughbred class), though they would likely have been available to an original purchaser.

It stands to reason that if these items were installed on a car restored to a Thoroughbred level, documentation woud be required.
