Topic: 1965 289 engine identification?

I am a rookie / newbie on here but I have 65 coupe listed under cars for sale. An interested person is inquiring about the 289 engine. Is it the original to the car? Before they travel across country to inspect the car I would like to provide them with the correct information. Is /are there engine size or casting numbers that I can verify on the block, tranny or other components? Regards, Megmaker in SW Michigan.

For a 289, look for casting numbers on the block back underneath the starter.  The picture of a 289 block below shows a casting number of C5AE-6015E with a date code of 5E3 (May 3, 1965).  There is not a VIN stamped on the 65 289 unless it is a HiPo engine.  You can also look for the metal tag usually attached to the intake manifold towards the front of the engine but this can be switched out so I would not consider it gospel unless you are sure its original.  See pictures below of tag for the block in the photo.

There is a boss on the block just in front of the drivers side head.
It has the date the engine was assembled stamped on it. That needs to be just shortly before the build date that is stamped on your door tag.

In 65 they were pumping the Stangs out as fast as possible so the engines did not sit around very long before they got dropped into a car, especially in Dearborn.

Here's the location of the small block engine assembly date: year (5), month (H), day (23) and inspector/assembly line worker ID (Z - code still under review). This is for a 66 289 engine; 64 and 65 small block engines (260, 289) are marked similar.
