'68 S-code chrome
« on: February 06, 2015, 09:42:42 PM »
My car is missing the original S-code engine, but I'm close to accumulating everything I need to put a correct one back together. I've got two air cleaners, one without a lid. The one that has a lid, but not a chrome lid. The base is correct, with the round vacuum motor, but the lid is not chrome. The lid and cleaner have both been repainted (badly, and the wrong color). It appears that they came from the same car, but I don't know for sure, and the assembly may have come out of a Cougar or other FoMoCo vehicle.

All of my research indicates that all '68 Mustang S-code cars had the chrome engine accessories - air cleaner lid, valve covers, breather car, dipstick handle and radiator cap. Is that a correct conclusion? Were any built, intentionally or otherwise, without the chrome accessories? I have no evidence either way for my vehicle, and the assembly I have is not admissable evidence since I don't know what it came off of.

My really late 68 Metuchen S code fastback (built 7/68, not sure of the day as I'm at work) still has it's chrome lid, Powered by Ford valve covers, Chrome dipstick, and breather cap.  Can't be sure about the chrome rad cap though... Never saw a 68 S code without this stuff chromed....

Hope this helps, John

+1  agree with air cleaner lid, breather, dip stick handle and valve covers. Think you'll be fine with the radiator cap though can't find an example. Not that the "chrome" caps look very different from a shinny zinc one in the end IMHO

Thanks John and Jeff. I'm basing the chrome rad cap off of 1) memory from older Mustang restoration books and 2) the MPC, which lists a C9ZZ chrome cap. MPC is far from gospel, which is why I ask the experts!
