289 hipo head information
« on: February 01, 2015, 10:57:53 PM »
Do all 289 hipo heads have screw in studs?  And do all 289 hipo heads have a 19 cast into the head near bottom corner of head and visible with valve cover on?  Do they have other numbers like a 21, 22?
What does the 289 with two dots represent?

Any help appreciated.

289 with 2 dots casting is a hi-po head.  I couldn't say absolutely for sure on screw in studs, but that would be to account for some one-off race cars or something like that.  K codes were the only Mustangs off the regular assembly line with double dot castings on the heads and screw-in studs.

Would a C3OE-B, E, and F, not be a 289 hipo?

And does the hipo head have the "19" always?  Do the C7 hipo heads have 19, 21 numbers and also do they have the 2 dot?

Gets confusing. The reason I'm asking a friend lead me to a gentleman that has a bunch of heads thats been lying around inside a shed. I've not been able to get over there yet. He is wanting to sell them and says a lot of the heads are Ford and he remembers C3OE marking and also has some C8AE markings. He mentioned several more but the C3OE got my attention.

That's the mold number and 19, 20 and 21 were used.

It's an additional identifier. The casting part numbers are C4OE-B, C5OE-A and C7ZE-A. The last was the smog head. For some reason the service heads, C8ZE-B did not have casting numbers, 19, 20 and 21.

Hipo heads also had pockets cast around the base of the spring and narrow slots for the push rods therefore not requiring guideplates.

I know guys who have added screw in studs to regular heads so don't recommend that as a 100% confirmation...it is really hard to add metal to castings so would focus on that instead  ;)

+1 plenty of times

Go with the 19-21 when the valve covers are on - with them off casting features IMHO
