While I had the fastback fiberglass panels out I snapped some pictures, and was curious if the factory added that piece of cloth tape or if the 2nd owner did that:

Chris here's a pic taken during disassembly of my '66 Dearborn coupe. The tape is in a little rough shape (to say the least!), but obviously a continuing practice:

 Was the purpose of the tape to prevent metal-on-metal rattles when the seat was installed?

The tape is not visible until you take off the quarter panel pieces.  I don't believe it was for that purpose of preventing rattles, but could be wrong

Believe that particular piece (on the other side of the interior panels from the seat) was there to protect workers climbing in and out of the rear area on a fastback installing the interior. The unprotected edges of some of the metal in the interior can be a bit sharp at times. You can find the same use of the cloth/gaffers tape in other areas of the interior depending on year and model

I've seen the tape on a lot of cars, might check in assembly manual to see if any notes.

ChrisV289....I noticed the sound deadner on the inside of the rear quarters looks like it was masked during the original application...did Ford do that?  I know this is off topic but could not resist...on the east coast we don't get to see that much metal left on our cars!

The "sharp edge" is a by product of how the stuff was applied and how close the wand was rather than masking off. You can also get the product to sort of roll into place by applying enough material and using the pressure during the application to push the edge forward where they wanted it to stop

You can find plenty of examples where one or more edges are sharp with no overspray and the other edge much smoother

Thanks Jeff.  Figured I'd take pictures since I hadn't seen that area before on this car.  Interior is mostly original except the carpet was changed out and the 2nd owner must of had that black sealer sprayed in on the floorboards    I had it all out to put the correct style carpet in that stops at the floor board.
