68 Shelby GT500 Smog
« on: January 22, 2015, 06:38:21 PM »
Is the Anti Backfire/Diverter bracket C8AE-9C486-A correct for the 68 GT500?  I know its used on the 428 CJs
but didnt know if it was correct for my car.

Anyone know where to get one?

Will double check number for you unless someone gets back before I do.

Where to find one -

First you need to figure out how original you want it - right date code, right engineering numbers or just one that looks correct and works?

You can find originals, replacement (NOS) with stampings and without. Ebay ads with unmarked cans stamped with reproduction dates and info.

Figure out exactly what will fit your need then use the wanted sections of the related forums and sites. Ebay can be a bit tricky with all the restamps and fakes/copies

Jeff,

I need the bracket that holds the backfire valve.  Its the small bracket that bolts to the thermostat housing.

Sorry Gary - read the post too quickly and skimmed over the word "bracket"

I believe it is correct for a GT500 but would want one of the 68 experts to confirm.

Yea, I saw that Manfield has the bracket, I wasnt looking to spend $145.00 for it if I can find an original.  Thats a lot for that small bracket, put if I cant find one anywhere else, I guess I'll have to get it.  Thanks for the info.

If you find one that no one knows what it is you might find it cheaper but don't hold your breath. The original will typically be substantially more which is why the relative lower price of the repro is looked at as a blessing ;) . Typically the only reason why they are saved is because the owner does know what it is. Also be careful when looking because the 68 j code with smog or B2 also use a similar but different bracket . The two are easy to confuse . The 68J code/B2 is not worth as much.

I'll sell you an original for twice that LOL. Like Bob said thats a reasonable price considering how hard originals are to find

.........The 68J code/B2 is not worth as much.

Not sure if I would include the 69 Boss bracket in that - just IMHO. Don't recall the last one I've seen. The pump mounts are $700-up or so.

But yes reproductions are not always inexpensive but you have to consider that someone had to invest allot of money to make them and how many they can sell in five years as well as get a decent/worthwhile return

Bob, I have several brackets here and they are all different.  I even have some off of a 390 trucks and there are all different.  I was just hoping that someone might have one they do not need.  Also I think the B2 people might disagree and say theirs worth more.  LOL.

Tim,  I guess I should of just traded
you that manual for the bracket.
Anyway just seeing what's out there.

[/color] I was speaking relative one to the other in my post . The 68/B2 brackets are worth less then the CJ ones typically but most people seeing what they bring 150.00 + or _ for the 68/B2 compared to 250.00 + or - for the CJ one typically would say ether one was crazy money for that small part.

Yea, I agree that is a lot of money for such a small bracket, ill
probably will end up with the Manfred repo one.  A local guy said he had a smog pump and brackets off of a FE, and I bought it, he was just going to toss it in the garage.  Turns out it was off of a 75 390. He couldn't believe that I was adding a smog pump to my car...

I can still remember bending the long smog tube back and forth (like what you do to a hanger ) to break it off and throwing it and all of the other tubes and brackets away back in late summer 1970 on my 69 CJ Mach I think what useless junk. Oh how my perception has changed.
