Ok, Play Identify the Ford Wire Wheel Hubcap.

Subject: Ok, Play Identify the Ford Wire Wheel Hubcap.

Ok, I've seen a lot of different Ford/Mustang Wire Wheel Hubcaps in my day, but this one has me stumped! (And I don't stump easy) I have never seen one like this.  It is a REAL Wire Wheel Hubcap, Not a simulated one, and the base looks identical to the '65-'69 Ford "REAL" Wire Wheel hubcap, but I've never seen one with this type of "Turned Down" Tri Bar Spinner.  A Kudos will go out to you if you can identify where (What model) car that this cap came from.  I can't find it in any Ford or Hollander catalogs either.  I've never seen anything like it.  The hubcap is 14" inch size..and heavy!  No Ford numbers on the backside either..At least none there anymore. The ink stamped number is gone from the backside.

Where's it From?  Do you know?  Can you identify it??

See pics below:

PS: If you're interested in this cap, It's 14" inch, and available and in nice shape...about a 8.5 condition. I have no use for it.  Just shoot me a PM.  Thanks.

Have seen that type of cover, but with a different flipper, same center cap.

Charles, When you say "flipper", What part are you referring to?

I have never ever seen this type "turned" down Tri-bar Spinner before....  It must have been a really low production of these.

I'm thinking somewhere around the '67-'69 timeframe...

In searching on ebay for 14" wire hubcaps for my wife's '65 Comet I've seen these pop up in the results.  Like you say they are '67-'69 timeframe and I believe they are for Mercury's vice Ford's.

The 14 inch is a C70Z1130-F, The 15 inch version is a C7AZ-1130-H. The spinner faces inward rather than outward like most spinner wheel covers of the era. I would think 67 Fairlane was the base application from the part number.

Well, Mystery solved....well almost.  I found out a few things about these caps...and what I found is very unusual! I still don't know the manufacturer of them.

#1. They were sold through the Ford Parts Counter, and they are vintage 1960's.

#2. They were also sold through Mopar and GM Parts counters!, but with different Spinners representing all "BIG 3" manufacturers! They were the optional "REAL WIRE WHEEL HUBCAP" option for the "BIG 3" manufacturers!

#3. They are not your typical aftermarket caps as they are very high quality, and heavy!

#4. They were available in 14" and 15".

Still looking for the manufacturer of these, but I found these on ebay:

This seems to be the 1966 Ford REAL "Wire Wheel" Hubcap.  This is the hubcap that I am used too when I think of a "REAL WIRE WHEEL" Mustang or Ford Hubcap.  Notice the Tri-bar spinner, but different than above.

And these....Same cap....but no spinners...

...Note the different Ford Spinners, but same caps...Most likely for years '67 to '69.

That's all for now!

:o)

More to come!

"Has the cougar layout but no cats."

That is just the later Post '65 Standard Ford Crest.  It was later used to represent the Ford LTD I think starting in '69-'70.

See this similar Cross-Thread over on the VMF... Very Interesting!

I have noticed that The Ford ones have a solid background, but the GM ones and some of the Mopar ones have Slots in the rear of the caps...They are otherwise the same cap.

Note the Plymouth caps on the Barracuda!

Plymouth Mopar Style...Sold over the MOPAR Parts Counter in the 1960's.

So, what did I WIN? I don't want the hubcap! lol!

Initially, I thought it was an aftermarket Wire cover for the very reasons you said...they were the same for all Big 3 companies.

I worked in a salvage yard in the 70's-80's at various times had to identify or find a single wheel cover or a full set for somebody. If it didn't match the Hollander, it was aftermarket, plain & simple. As you found out, and so did I, if you changed out the centers you could build one or a few to suit a request. Sometimes in a junkyard request, the customer would have a damaged one we could salvage out the center from, other times we would scab one off a 15 inch cap for a 14 inch request and so on. Sometimes, we would build a set of 4 out of various parts & pieces. In the day, lifting wire wheel covers was a very commom theft. Enter the Locking Hubcaps of the later 70-80's cars.

Who knew???  :D   Well, I did! I was hoping to see other input to help confirm what I recalled already. This is a case of what I would have considered "Useless Knowledge" ...until this post.

If I recall from back in the day, they are late 67, and I believe that it had to do with the highway safety administration rules of the time, causing the manufacturers to turn the sinners inward for safety reasons.

I believe they 1967 as well.  I would say that you are correct as the 1966 ones did not have the "turned down" spinner, They had a regular Tri-Bar spinner...and they were right before the entire Federal ban on spinners..probably early '67 I'm betting. The production on these was so short that they didn't even make catalogs.  That would explain why the caps before these in '66 and later in '68 made the Ford Parts catalogs and these didn't...with this type spinner.
