GT gas cap
« on: December 16, 2014, 02:44:45 PM »
Hello you all,

Just out curiosity... when having a GTA fastback which is the correct gas cap (style)?
I have seen (pictures) with 'GT' in black fond and in red.
Obvious there is a difference, otherwise it would always be black or red?
Not knowing which is authentically on a car of +/- 50 years old, better be safe than sorry  ;)
Thanks for explaining this.
Kind regards,
Jeroen

Hi Jeroen
The black lettering is correct for a 67 GT and the red is correct for a 68 GT.
Hope this helps
Marty

It certainly does!
Thanks Marty.
Another question about this : is there always an engineering number on the backside of the gascap?
Or isn't every item marked with a stamp/engineering number?
Thanks for the info  :)

No - plenty of parts that make up our cars don't carry any identification numbers. Way too many to list

One more thing to note - the discussion above is correct if the GT optioned vehicle also had the exterior decor option.

Without exterior decor, the 67 model would have a twist cap, not pop-open

Thank you for that explanation.
The car came with the exterior and interior decor option.
Now I am sure it is correct.
Thanks !

Correct me if wrong, NON GT equipped vehicles with a "Running horse" badge with the Pop-open design,
are those only on exterior decor equipped cars or can they be optionally installed for any model Non-GT?

Part of the exterior decor option, not separate from factory, is my understanding.  Dealer or over the counter is always a possibility.

Tracking off thread a bit but while we are addressing the pop-open gas cap, I saw one of these SAFETY conversion kits a while back...I couldn't EVER bring myself to installing one of these "Safety Kits" on my classic Mustang...but I guess that's me! (That's not Concours, What was the P.O. thinking!)

Those pop open and a twist off is then exposed located under the pop cover

Also for pop ups in addition to exterior decor there might have been some special cases like sprint packages, Indy pace setters, Cali specials etc that include it.

Is the discussion about 67 or 68 caps?

I think 67...but there was a question about 67 vs. 68.  I might have stretched the discussion a bit far, but felt the need to put some context around it for possible future readers of the post.

Guess that is what for me ( and possibly future readers) lost me. When we went from 67 and then started to refer to Calif Specials for example. Maybe when we first title threads we can include more details (as in thus case 67) so that people doing searches don't end up going through threads that are not in their focus. Members looking for 69 GT details in this example would be one :)

Just as easily the thread could have taken a right turn into a deep discussion of exterior decor packages/option through the years

Just a thought

Interesting to know that the GT and the GTA had the same gas cap.
I don't always downshift, but when I do it is near a Prius so they can hear me hurting the environment.

Agreed - my initial comment was to make sure that readers don't think that all GT/GTA models got pop-open gas caps, which is a common misconception.  I guess I strayed a bit too far, and will try to do better.
