ALTERNATOR Correctness 67 289 w/AIR Conditioning.
« on: December 15, 2014, 11:42:09 AM »
I've had my eye on a 55amp alternator on eBay for a while, Priced at $220 (top 3 images). Maybe not the best of Concours condition available but looks like a good job.

Thoughts please on this example.

I ALSO recently spotted a $69 version (bottom 2 images) of a very similar job. Thoughts on the $69 version too please.

I am looking to present my finished project as an example of an Occasionally Driven, yet trailered beyond about 75 miles (anything an hour or more away). My scope is not primarily planning on MCA Judged shows only at this time but very likely later on I would move towards those events as well. (as transportation arrangements eventually allow ~Read as I do not have a good rig and trailer yet)

Thoughts on correctness for initial assembly using either example provided, thoughts on better ideas that might help keep costs minimum considering my scope of staying local.

NOTED DIFFERENCES: The $69 one is media blasted with what looks to be a gold painted pulley/fan, the $220 one is tumbler cleaned and called out in the listing as "anodized" pulley/fan.

I would be best to show the same angles for both examples  so a comparison could be made but with limited availability to the example I can understand the variation. The finish on the pulley and fan does not appear to be paint on the 69.00 one but the correct zinc dichromate gold finish although the parts were fairly rough when plated. In general the lower price one is looks comparable in details but lower quality. Anodizing is not the correct description of the appropriate finish. So far the 69.00 alt looks like a good compromise if dollars are a issue vs.the best look.

Bob, Thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered one. I believe the images provided in the listing are a "canned image" and not necessarily of the one actually being shipped. Actual product may vary...we'll see when it arrives. I might also upload images of the actual item if anyones cares to see "What you really get for $69" (+$12 shipping = $81)

Where did you find one on E-Bay for $69.00  I have looked and can't find one that cheap.  Can you tell me where you got one from?

I"m looking for one for my 68 GT500.

THANKS

 :o
 ;D
every once in a while a get a good lick in  :D

The BIN price was either $115 or $125, I cannot remember. I won it in the auction with $69 starting bid and BIN. Looks like he didn't like the starting bid anymore or he is a Concours Mustang member and is reading this.

I don't think there is a cost effective way to rebuild yours, I see you made another thread about building. Cleaning, plating the pulley and fan, then putting bearings and brushes in it would cost you well above the now price of $95+ shipping. Just wait out the auction...if it goes higher, wait out another one.

It came in today, Not bad, but Concours people or MCA Judges might feel differently  ::)  ;)

Ink mark is off, closer to the larger mounting hole from "canned images" of the listing.

It hard to tell for sure in the pics but the case looks painted or cleared.

Listing claims as not painted & also I "scratch tested" at the back side of the large mounting boss, where it would butt into the spacer, no signs of paint or clearcoat. It looks less "shiney" in person, most of the shine is light reflection from the flash. Picture is taken with a Samsung phone.

ALSO: I noticed the pulley came with a C9AF-10-352-B engineering/part number   :P I'll probably look into getting that corrected.

What would the CORRECT pulley's engineering number be on a '67, single pulley, non-K?

Thanks for posting the pics Richard,

I won an auction for one for my 68 GT500 and I am getting one for one of my 69 428CJ cars.
I'll see what pulley comes on mind, I might trade you if I get one you need, I dont remember ever seeing part numbers on pulleys before, I guess most out there are after market.

I have been in contact with the seller and he (John) is very cooperative. He has offered me the C5 pulley. Interesting note and something I found out more on at deadnutson.com last night, the rear housings differ also.  see images here: http://www.deadnutson.com/albums/album_image/7071446/5278642.htm

Using Jack's identification chart for identifying, neither example in my original post would then be correct
My build date of the 67 I am working on is 11/02/66 so the first image, without the teardrop in the center of the housing would be "correct" No ??? (I am asking this as a QUESTION) The housing that came on mine has the teardrop and AUTOLITE casting, so correct for 6/68 and newer, correct?

Well, that would explain the big difference in pricing I think...but I imagine, had I requested a build to suit my needs in the first place, this vendor would have certainly done the best they could with inventory on hand.

It is pretty common for most builders to mix and match parts, that is why I usually send my originals in to a restorer like Dead Nuts On. They make it their business to make sure it is correct. Last auto parts store one that I bought did not work for a month.
