PROJECT: Making a Better Reproduction 69 Back-Up Light

Click the link below for pdf version of this article
Reproduction 69 Back-up Light Improvements Article.pdf

TIME: Approx 3 hrs

SUPPLIES:

- Gloss white spray paint
- Rustoleum Reflective spray paint (optional)
- Flat screw driver, small tack hammer, needle nose pliers, deep socket set
- Various cleaners
- 000 steel wool[/color]

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

While starting to install all those indiviual parts that make up a restored car I inspected a pair of reproduction back-up lights the owner had purchase. Though they were shinny and nice, when compared to the originals a number of differences stood out.

The differences included

- Looking at the plugs, the originals used a red plug while the reproductions a black one

- The reproduction lacked the outer jacket over the wires from the rubber grommet to the larger jacket immediately behind the lamp body.

- The original outer jacket also had the factory markings something we’re always trying to keep with our restorations.

So we cleaned the original wires, grommet and socket and swapped it with the ones that came with the reproductions.  Happy with the results I wanted to share the info here. The same method can be applied to other years and front turn indicators also. As usual the link to the full article is above.

Hope this helps others in their restoration efforts.

Jeff, What did you use to clean the wiring?

The article (just click on the pdf link) mentions it but used some degreaser then some hand cleaner - finishing with some weather strip dressing (some pricey coconut oil stuff.

Taking care to stay away from the markings as much as I could. Plug was the most difficult - a few little dental picks and an old tooth brush helped there.

My apologies for not seeing the pdf article Jeff. I read the post and didn't see the cleaning product mentioned. I have now saved (and read!), the full article. Thanks very much!!

No need for an apology. The attached articels is something we thought we would try since its a nicer way to save or even print out and take to the shop while doing the job.

Your welcome - and thanks for joining us.
