70 steel rims
« on: October 17, 2014, 11:41:38 PM »
I need some  advice please..I have found 4 rims ( 14 -7) for my 1970 mach 1 the guy who has them says they are original and have the trim rings and poverty hubcaps as I call them. Now I have  four hubcaps for a 1970 mustang     with no road rash they are like brand  new , some guy took them off  his car when it was new.I don't have pics of them but will they fit the rims?   are all rims the  same? Seems like a dumb q  , also they  are off a drum brake car. I have  added  factory disc  brakes to my car, my car had drum brakes . Call me crazy but I'm going to put  stock rims back on the car.

According to Ford lit. for 1970 I've seen, 14x7 wheels were used on 351C-4V and 428CJ/SCJ cars. 14X6 wheels were used on the rest. I've read posts from those with 351-2V cars saying they had 14x7 wheels, and maybe that's how they were delivered, but the Ford dealer info shows it the way I've stated. I've never seen anything that suggested any difference for the type of brakes - there would just be no mechanical reason for doing so.

I can't comment about the base trim ring/poverty cap wheelcovers, but the sport wheelcovers came in two sizes (two part #s); one for 14x7, one for 14x6 wheels. The only difference between the two is the depth of the integral trim ring. For this reason, I'd worry the trim rings in your case wouldn't interchange between the two size wheels. The Ford parts book (sorry, mine isn't handy right now) should show whether two different rings were used and perhaps dimensions along with the part numbers.

Trim rings and sport wheel covers made for 14x7 wheels won't fit 14x6 wheels, they bottom out on the center of the rim. You can put the caps and rings designed for 14x6 wheels on 7" rims, but they look stupid....

I've also read that 2v mach1's had 6"rims, but the 4 I've owned all had 7" rims.

Both the trim rings and sport wheel covers where made in 3 versions (for mustangs in 70)  14x6, 14x7, and 15x7 (boss 302)

Btw- brakes (drum or disc) should make no difference with rim size as long as you have the correct (1970) rims

Hope this helps, John
