Early 65 Chrome SMCO Radiator Cap
« on: April 06, 2014, 03:25:17 PM »
Is there a way to tell an original vs. a reproduction?  I have a very nice SMCO chrome cap that I was told was an original, but I wanted to see if there was a way to verify.

Attached is a picture of the cap I have.

I can't help will the posters question but the picture provided raises a question.  It would seem that there are two radiator caps available in reproduction; one zinc and the other chrome.  Both versions are S.M.C.O. w/no brass button.  Which is the most correct for a 65, san Jose, Mid May, non AC, 4 speed car ?  Thanks,  Brian

The chrome center was for cars with chrome-dress up kit... although not all K codes had them and it has been thought that K codes should only have the brass center cap.

Regarding the authenticity of the one in the picture, it looks like a repro.  Would help to see a pic of the bottom.

Thanks for the reply and information.  My 65 does not have the chrome dress up kit, air cleaner, valve covers and oil filler cap, so a reproduction zinc S.M.C.O. would be the as best correct replacement ?  Brian

Just a note... I have found the Chrome ones stay nice over the years, and the ones with the zinc centers tend to get nasty sometimes....  :o)
