Fixing a '67 low fuel tank sending unit

I have a 1967 "A" code coupe. At one time(1987-1989) I came across a 1967 Cougar XR7 in a wrecking yard that had the Convenience Control group. I grabbed a number of the unique items (door latches(not the door wiring :(), parking brake switch, the fuel sending unit, the console harness to the indicator lights).
So the fuel sending unit doesn't work, and they don't reproduce them (that I have seen..). Is there anyone who can fix or restore the sending unit? If so, how much does it cost?
I saw a Cougar supplier who at one time was selling the non-working units (not cheap) and I was wondering why someone would buy one for close to $200.00.
Is it so when you enter a show, do you get points or credit for having the "correct" sending unit installed when your car has the option, even if it doesn't work?

Re: Fixing a low fuel sending unit. It has tqo functions. Primary function as a guage. Secondary as a low fuel sensor. Parts can be obtained to repair each of these functions.

Re: Adding an option to a car and about points/credit for working or not. As a Concours forum, you will not get much response to that part of your question at this site because it falls outside the scope of Concours. Best answer I could give to you is if it is THERE, it should be all there and in consistancy to original installation. Judging is different for different classes. Many threads at this site along the lines of your questions (maybe about different options, but rules of judging in general)  The "search feature" can be your friend. An incredible amount of information recently discussed about the low fuel lamp operation. Do a search, spend some time reading. Your answers are here.

That should answer some of your questions.

In regards to someone who would restore it I have not seen that service advertised.  Because of that, once I set up my test bed and restore the three that I have in hand, I would be in the position to fix yours.

Regarding purchasing a non working unit...if you need it, and don't have one, and new ones are not available...you take a chance on a used non working unit and see if you can fix it yourself.

Next regarding shows, there are many shows out there.  If you are talking about an MCA show concours class (Richard is correct that different classes have different rules) there is no point awarded for cool stuff, just points taken away for incorrect items, cleanliness, etc.  If that is where you are headed I recommend joining MCA and downloading the pertinent rules.

West Coast Cougar was selling the wiring and bulb not long ago (if they are not still doing it)  If its not a normal thing for them to carry anymore they might have one or two repair kits on the shelf. Purchased on a year or two ago when I was attempting to repair one

Depends on what year your discussing. For my Cougar if I don't have one at least the same design then I don't have any place to connect the return line from the fuel pump - not good. Then I have to purchase and installed a different pig tail to the wire loom since its different between the standard sending unit and the low fuel one

Yes that would be a good reason since even if it does not work I can get full credit (no deductions) in the visual inspection.  And in original terms it's more correct and original that having the wrong sending unit
