Correct Trap door bumper
« on: September 02, 2014, 11:32:25 AM »
I am looking for the correct trap door bumpers for my early 66 fastback. I have seen a few different online. Are either of these correct for my car?

Thanks,

Jeff

Specific build date (door tag projected date will have to do in this example)  would help as well as the plant.

Believe Ford changed these bumpers a hand ful of times trying to address rattle and other complaints. TSBs will help use - just need more info

Ours are the same as your top photo, with the flat tips and are original to the car, if this info eventually helps you. I know that additional info about YOUR car is forthcoming. Just happened to see this post on my lunch break...

Again what plant, and a more precise build date, should be listed. There are all kinds of "running changes" to contend with.

I knew it would not be that easy so I will provide the details when I get back to the house. Thanks for the early responses.

Some measurements: (See first post)
First picture: no reference.
Second picture: looks like p/n 380546-S, which is shown as the service replacement in the illustrated body section 610 pg 6, 75 ed.
0.646oa l;Bumper 0.469in L, 0.625in d; Panel 0.078in t, 0.250in hole. Per Ford Standard and Utility Parts Catalog, July 66 (Osborn Reprod).
Third picture: looks like p/n 370374-S, which is what was used in the same application for 67-70, however, this same bumper is used behind the two panels above the 65-66 trap door probably for vibration reduction or panel spacing. 65 Body Assy p 55, 66 Body Assy p 51.
1 1/8oa l; Bumper 43/64 (0.671in), 5/8in od; 13/64 (0.203in) mounting hole. Per Ford Standard and Ulility Parts Catalog, Jun 65 (Osborn).
The part reference in the 65 and 66 Body Assembly Manuals, 359767-S, does not appear to have any reference info except the callout in the body manuals.

As promised went through the TSB articles to see what fixes were incorporated in production since I recalled a couple of articles that tried to address rattles and fit issues with the early fastbacks. Both of the fixes are dated before your car was assembled. The last of the two TSB articles identifies a new bumper and location of mounting. That change was incorporated into production on March 1, 65 approx 6 months prior to you cars projected build date.

The "new" for that period rubber bumper is shaped differently from the ones you have a picture of - but not to worry since there appears to have been another one designed and used after that one  ::)

Yours was likely closest to the top most pictures shown in your original post though the base looks to have been shaped slightly flatter

Your third/bottom picture looks like the ones used on the fold down section of the rear seat

Ya spent at least three hours on this one - sort of an onion  as one thing lead to another. Found plenty of details that didn't end up applying to your specific car  but had to follow it as far as possible :)
