Sun X
« on: August 13, 2014, 10:53:04 PM »
The rear window glass in my 9/19/68, non AC, Metuchen fastback is clearly marked Sun-X.  My impression was that the Sun-X glass was for AC cars ?  Was the Sun-X glass clear or tinted for 69.  Thanks,  Brian

I believe "Sun-X" is tinted glass. I have never seen otherwise. Usually positioned under the "Carlite" or "Ford" logo.

It was an option separate from A/C most years. I ordered a new Mustang, and an F-150 that way.

As far as I know all 65-68 Fastbacks had Sun-X rear windows. Probably also on
69 and 70 Sport Roofs.

I should add that all the glass in my car is marked Sun-X except the clear windshield.  Brian

All Fastback Rear Glass through 1973 was SUN-X because of the larger area of glass. All SUN-X glass is tinted light green in color. As far as I know, SUN-X was not mandatory with A/C but it was highly recommended. And Yes, it was available on cars without A/C.

What kind of markings / date codes have you got on your windshield Brian? Having a clear windshield if all the other glass is Sun-X with date codes that make sense would not be typical. I suspect that the windshield was changed at some point.

The side and back glass does seem to have a very subtle greenish tint, glass is dated 8G or 8H and is marked CARLITE Sun-X.  The windshield is clear, marked CARLITE-Laminated and is dated 8H.  No mention of tinted glass in the Marti report.  Brian

In my experiences, I've never seen a car equipped that way. In fact if anything, it's the other way around. It was possible at least in some model years to order just the windshield tinted, or tinted and shaded. Of course it's still possible for it to have been replaced at some point in the past. The year is not incorporated in the date code, so you still had a 1 in 12 chance of matching it!  ;)

The Year is incorporated in the date code with 8H being either August 1968 or August 1978. However, Brian's Windshield glass has the correct for 1969 (CarLite) Logo instead of the later CARLITE block letters logo which I believe had been introduced before 1978. Brian, if SUN-X is not mentioned in the Marti nor is your car an A/C car then my personal best guess would be that your side glass has been replaced at some point. It would have been fairly easy for a PO to replace the side glass, more so then replacing the windshield with a date correct original piece. A lot of the 69s had their door glass replaced pretty early on due to the poor design of the glue-in mounting.

Good catch Andrew. Marti report would be very helpful.
Been looking at too many sheet metal stampings I guess lately.

While window replacement is always a possibility.  Doubtful.  When I stated side glass I meant doors and quarters.  The windows are the OE glue in version and have not been switched for the 70 bolt-ins.  The window tint is very faint in fact barely discernible.  Is there a spot on the build sheet that would be of some help ?  Brian

No the buildsheet does not cover glass installation. Believe glass was already installed by the end of the first half of assembly - prior to the applications of buildsheets

My rear window and both vent windows are marked SUN-X also, but my doors have been changed out at some point from a '70 as it has bolted in windows and the front I had changed a long time ago so I can't say there ether ( wish I knew better back then to pay attention) and my car is also a none A/C.
