Fresh Air Knob

What is the best way to clean up the Fresh Air vent knob on a 64.5 with out removeing the A on it? I am scared to touch it. The A is really nice and sharp however the knob does have the typical "white dust" and crud that these get from sitting.

Use some Mother's mag polish, comes in a small red/white container.

Does anyone know the approx change over date from when the A was deleted on the fresh air knob in San Jose?

Since we don't have real dates for any of these cars dates can't be estimated as exact. The VIN range I've got (so maybe 3000 more in either direction) right now is between 5R138-14000 and 5R159637. The 3000 plus or minus might make up for the fact that the cars were not built in numerical order  but that 3000 might be already built in to the range. If you look at the earliest to latest its almost there ;)

Wide range with allot of (by vin) overlap on this detail

Something I was thinking about earlier:  What exactly did Ford use to put the "A" on the knob?  Is it possible that some of these early cars originally had the "A," but that wear and usage caused the letter to wear off?

The 'A' is lightly pressed into the plastic on the knob.  Think the white might wear off, but the impression of the letter would remain.  Not an area that would get a lot of contact, but cleaning could remove the white.

Thought about that too, but the "C" on my choke cable is pressed in as Charles describes, and still is very white.  Nothing on the air vent handle.
