64.5 Hinge Pillar Detail
« on: August 10, 2014, 09:19:22 PM »
Hope I'm not starting a thread thats already been discussed.

On my April built Dearborn 64 1/2, the hinge pillars seam to have some un-used tabs. Was this a mistake, or have other cars been found this way? I assume were intended to be used to retain the "cage nuts" for the door hinges.
So I guess I have two questions.
1). Should these have been bent in to help hold the cage nuts?
2). How did they seal the holes?
After much searching, I came across an old post of Jeff's showing pictures of an early car. It almost looks like they taped over the un-used tabs. Does anyone know for sure what the technique was?

The black car is my car, and the yellowish car  was photographed by Jeff.

Those are probably just alignment tabs, saw the same thing on the pace car coupe I did.

Interesting. My car was built in the midst of the pace car batches.

So, the "fixture" that installed/aligned the door would use these during assembly?

Also, still wondering how to finish, or seal these. was tape used?  Strip caulk ball? Would it be before primer, paint, after, or in between?

The pic shows is as the car was during tear-down.  It's not an area that would be screwed with normally, especially if a car had a normal re-spray.

I don't recall how we did it on the pace car, probably some seam sealer over the top of primer, primed again and then color.  Factory probably installed seam sealer on bare metal.

My early 65 Dearborn convertible has the same tabs...covered with a piece of tape then sealed/primed/painted.  I've got pics somewhere

Thanks Sam.
That kind of confirms what I thought I was seeing in those teardown pictures. If you have some pictures, please post them.

Went through the collection (looking for pictures for the tie down thread) and found the following that might help. Not the greatest pictures but they were not taken with the focus on this detail

5F08D176922 - nothing there any more (too much sun exposure) but you can make out where the tape and sealant was applied

5F08D114168 - Just enough to see the tape lifting and the sealant

Hope this adds to the understanding of the detail and the plant practices

There it is!  :)
Thanks Jeff. Guess I'll use Gorilla Tape, and sealer with a brush after the last coat of epoxy.

I found one pic of my car in that area, it looks a lot like the others:
