Pinch weld black out on rocker 1964 1/2
« on: October 25, 2013, 12:46:18 PM »
I was wondering how best to duplicate the rocker panel pinch weld blackout on my 64 1/2 coupe. I have heard it could have been brushed-on or sprayed? My car did not come with rocker moldings, does that make a difference? What would be the best technigue and what paint would best duplicate this, semi- gloss, satin, etc.?? Thanks!

Most likely sprayed - believed any found brushed was when they were skipped and the mistake was caught later down th eline

No

Like the factory did. Just after the exterior color as been applied before any additional body panels were installed. Duplicating the overspray and direct coverage found on your original cars or lacking that other cars built at the same time and plant. Applied with a soft outer edge (not a tapped/sharp edge)

Here is a June 1964 built HiPo Coupe with original paint.  The pinch weld black out was brushed on.

Here is a May 1964 built Convertible with original paint.  The pinch weld black out was also brushed on.

I would duplicate with a semi-gloss (but not too glossy) black.

Never tested it but I would guess that the brushed details was likely  lacquer for the shorter drying time reasons

That pinch weld black out was under the front fenders also wasn't it?

Yes, applied before the fenders were hung.
