70 Mach 1 Exhaust tips

Were the factory rolled exhaust tips welded to the extension pipes, or was a bracket used? The factory assembly manual shows a clamp, but I have some NOS replacement tips (slash cut) that are welded.

My original 70 Mach 1 rolled tips are welded to extension pipes. The extension pipes are then clamped to the pipe that goes over the axle. The service replacement tips are made to be welded to the extension pipes but some people clamp them on which is incorrect.

Yea the straight cut tip replacements are welded but are also offered as just the tips similar to the ones below. I had a rolled tip NOS pair {just the tips} a few years ago but sold them. No
extensions welded on.

The original 1970 Mach 1 tips were different for passenger and driver side.

The driver side tip is welded to a 2.25-inch aluminized pipe, that is then clamped to the over-axle pipe.

The passenger side tip is not welded to a pipe, but is clamped directly to the over-axle pipe.

Hi Scott, got a related question, Is the 428 exhaust system the same as the small block Mach1 system from the H pipe back ?  I was told a long time ago that the original 70 428 systems were one piece welded from the H pipe back, including the tip ?

I have several sets of NOS 70 rolled tips (long and short) , one of the long tips was shipped from the factory during the production run (still in the shipping packaging) and it's shaped differently at the rear where the tip necks down to the pipe. Have you ever heard of this ? Not sure whether it's a supplier thing or a production/service part thing..

Finally dug some tips out, and I think I answered my own question....

The first 2 tips in the pic's are rolled tip service parts, they are not dated but I'm guessing they are from the mid 1980's

The 3rd Tip from the left (Long tip) was shipped from Dearborn to the "Assy Division, Ford Motor Co. , Metuchen Assembly plant" on July 10, 1970 and marked Attn, "Visiting Mfg Engr" so I'm sure it's a production tip.

The last short tip is a service part from 1979

It appears the 3rd and 4th tip match, and the wide part of the chrome tip is about 1/2" shorter than the later pair

Sooo, I'm guessing that it's an early/late  service part thing

I'm sure Scott knows this, but just some general info for everyone else  ;D .........

Just FYI, The short side chrome tip appears to be the same part that's welded on the end of the pipe on the long tip, except there's a part number stamped in the bottom of the short tip, and there's a notch cut in the rear edge to index the tip on the tail pipe.

Short side part numbers:
D0ZZ-5255-B , engineering number D0ZA-5C262-C

Long side part numbers:
D0ZZ-5255-A, engineering number D0ZA-5C203-C
