Topic: 1970 Mach1 Trunk Lid Stripes

I am looking for the most correct and best quality trunk lid stripe kit for my 1970 Mach 1, any recommendations would be appreciated. What is the correct color in black, glossy or matte for an early built Dearborn car, asking as I have seen both available?

I checked vol 9 of the MCA rules (pp. 4) and nothing specific is noted about the trunk stripe finish. I too have a Dearborn '70 Mach I am restoring and I am inclined to apply a 'flat' or 'matte' black decal. I'm not at that point yet but its coming. I will keep my eyes open for more info.

Hi Export, I had a set of old NOS stripes for many years which I tried to apply lately and they did not turn out so well, during application they trapped air bubbles in numerous places which could not be removed, so sadly ended up destroying them. They where a hi quality 3M product but where from before 1988 as the 88 Olympic logo was on the backing paper. They where a matt black but did not match my painted hood striping which is a semi gloss finish that is supposed to be the correct color based on paint codes I have receive through different sources.

The matt black on that old kit is less shinny then the semi gloss paint, I guess not a big issue on the trunk stripe but placing the matt black 428 numbers on the hood in the gap between the painted stripes will definitely show the difference between them. I have been told that the striping kits do have a shelf life and should be used within a couple of years or so, but I can not confirm that. I am just going to have to order a new kit from a vendor and see what I get and for the 428 numbers if the color is not close to my painted hood strip I will have them custom made by a local vendor.

My Dearborn R codes have solid stripes with no 428. Did yours originally have gaps with 428?

That's a good question, my car had been repainted green over the original calypso coral. I had the hood soda blasted and was not there when they did it so I do not know what showed under the green paint. I opted for the 428 as the data available indicated it could be either way but more than likely without the numbers. But I prefer the look of the 428 in the stripe and went that route. Thanks for the input, I also painted my hood stripes, rear louvers and spoiler all the same color semi gloss black.

You mention semi gloss paint, is that the texture of your hood stripes? The correct paint for your hood stripe and hood scoop is Textured Low Gloss Black (original PPG code was Ditzler DDL-9381/92812).

I wouldn't be too concerned with the finish mismatch between the engine displacement decal and the hood stripe paint. Ive seen plenty of concours and unrestored '70 Machs with that condition. The factory wasn't too concerned IMHO.

You are correct that the factory finish was textured and the DDL 9381 will produce that, and even though I am trying to build a pretty much concours correct car that finish is almost impossible to maintain and deal with when cleaning and waxing the car and I opted to go with a none textured finish even though it is not concours. I actually have a couple of quarts of the DDL 9381 for that painting work which I never used and their for sale.
