Actual engine build date
« on: September 25, 2019, 01:07:13 AM »
Hi All,

On doing a lot of research I have seen comments made about actual build date of the engine. This possibly being a stamping on the front of the block stating something like 9B126. Does anyone have a good photo of what this may looks like for a 69 Metuchen built Cobra Cobra jet?

Hey apologies if this has been post already, I can assure you I have looked with no luck.

Regards Greg.

Hi Richard,

Think you, I knew it was going to be there somewhere.

Greg the assembly date stamp on my 9/19/69 Metuchen block is located on the ' lug ' top.  Located at the Left and rear upper corner of the block. That would be at the top of the block and below the head.  On the Left side and nearest the firewall.  Picture of a ' lug ' posted, with white dot, and one lug is located at each corner of the block.  I will say nearly impossible to see with the engine in the car.  Brian

Just as a reminder -  For the purpose of engine assembly, machining date and so on (not VIN) the assembly plant would not make a difference since they were all stamped at the engine plant not the car plant

Hi,

Thank you for your responses.

Could I safely assume this would be it? It’s been stamped multiple times. 9B126 is seen and two stamps with LL.

I have typically seen the BB engine build date on the driver side ear that is above the oil filter adapter.

Where is that surface located. Close-up sometimes loose identifiable landmarks ;)

The stamps in that location may or may not be ones done by a rebuild machine shop to identify the block .

How does the dating shown line up with the casting dates found on the block?

The double L (LL) may be an identifier for a later rebuild as Bob wrote but the others follow much/some of the typical engine plant pattern though the location is interesting and deserved further comparison and study IMO

Hi Jeff,

Lines up perfectly. Car build date 02/21/69, block cast date 9B4 C Scratch.

Engine never rebuilt, crank still on original ford main bearing with 1 69 date stamp. All dates I believe line up perfectly on components other than water pump. All either A or B.

My first concerns was that someone stamped the numbers in to make it appear it was original. When I seen the C scratch I felt a lot better.

I do have lots of photos if it’s of interest.

Regards Greg
