Can shock absorbers be rebuilt?  If so, any recommendations on who does it?

Not aware of any one that rebuilts the FoMoCo or Autolite shocks for our cars

Unfortunately I think its an impossible or at least impractical task

Approx 4 years ago myself and another fellow Australian had some original and correctly dated 65/66 Autolite front and rear shocks which we wanted to retain on our concours cars. so we set out to find someone who could rebuild these with current technology.
it can be done but is expensive, think the rebuild was $150 AUD per shock.  i have since used the front on a previous resto with no dramas and good road feel.  the rears will be used on a US project shortly.

From memory they just cut the top of shocks and when completed welded the top back one matching there original appearance.  have some images if interested?

I am not sure to what extent this person can help but may be worth a try. I have sent him a shock for replacement of a stud (recently sent so can't offer a review of his service). He services all type of classic shocks and was one of several I came across during a search to provide a relatively simple repair.  The next time I talk to him I want to ask if he can reproduce the Gabriel Stryder types used on 69-70 GT500's. Looks like he stamps shocks as well.

Dan at http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/servicesoffered/unspecified/unspecified/1030203.html, told me if enough owners are interested he would be able to reproduce the Gabriel Stryder type shock. The cost would be too high for a single set. The stud replacement (for what its worth) was identical to what needed to be replaced.
