Late 65 Dearborn - Bolts on car
« on: March 16, 2014, 08:12:11 PM »
Resuming the painting scheme on the car. Check out the bolts in some of these pics and help me out on what they should look like once done. I believe they need to be removed and put back in at a later time?????
What I mean is the star washers will look too be buried in the paint and the bolts look like they were in place when painted instead of put in after the body paint?

I'll take a shot -

Picture 1

Braces (and hardware) should not be installed at this stage. End result more accurate if braces are painted a different shade. For example, engine bay is often a satin color and not a jet black, and the braces could be semi-gloss black since they would probably show up at the assembly plant from a supplier or other stamping plant, and already painted.  As Carlite mentioned the hardware would not be painted.

Picture 2

Same comment as 1. Also hood hinge bolts and master cylinder bolts should not be installed yet, nor painted.  The push through retainers for the firewall pad should not be installed at this stage nor painted.

Picture 3

Same comments as 2 on hood hinge bolts and firewall pad retainers

Picture 4

Door hinge bolts ok as is. Probably the only bolts from here forward that should be on the car during priming.

Picture 5

Don't see anything additional.  Looks like test fitting of the engine mounts under way - no primer there.

I suggest that you get a set of the 65 Mustang Assembly Manuals by Osborn Reproductions; Body, Interior, Electrical, Engine Accessories, and the 64-65 Chassis and the 64-65 Weld & Sealant Manuals. A good deal of your questions are answered there, especially the hardware finish, engine compartment finish, assembly order and window alignment. They are about 90 to 95 percent accurate but give you a reference that many of us can use to assist you in your project.
