Underlayment
« on: March 05, 2014, 09:59:09 PM »
I've got the interior out of the car and noticed two pieces of underlayment beneath the carpeting.  The first layer a brown fibrous material.  The second layer had a asphalt layer bonded to a heavy multi colored jute I believe. The first car I did there was only dust, crumbs and rust under the carpet.

The questions I have are:
1.  Not sure exactly what these different materials are or where used for.
2.  Did the deluxe interior have any additional underlayment treatment
3.  Lots of high tech underlayments out there on the market.  On concours. restorations is it recommended to stick with the older original applications.

I was able to salvage most of the pieces I think they could be re-used or replicated to keep the originality.

Thank you,

Could it be that a PO peeled off the carpet underlayment and simply left it in the care over the regular jute and tar floor underlayment?

Seen this a few time were the owner thought they would improve things by doubling up and or some locally made carpet would not have the underlayment attached to the back side like the original and reproductions (well most of them over the years)

The standard and deluxe in 67-68 used the same underlayment from what I've  seen  Cougars used that little square section under the two front seats  - don't recall if that little piece was added on the deluxe interiors

+1 I have never seen any extra pieces used on the deluxe interiors either. Super floors lucky you.

After a closer look at the back side of the carpet I can clearly see where the brown shaggy stuff was once part it.  Is the material on the bottom of the aspaltic material Jute.  It looks very similar to the material that they use under laminent wood floor.  It is multi-colored pieces of fabric.  Does anybody know what that brown stuff is or where one can get it.

Thanks guys for the help!

Just referred to as jute from what I've seen. No current source for it (in that thickness) other than donor (old) carpet

As mentioned had not either - or didn't recall seeing them.   But going through pictures looking for something to help another discussion here found this example

Standard interior 68 San Jose built car - interesting

Thought I should share ;)
