Hood paint
« on: March 19, 2014, 08:50:02 AM »
Ok dumb question. I am going to assume that the bottom of the hood is painted body color as well. Not some off the wall thing like black?

That's what makes all the difference between a regular resto and Gold class resto. Back in the 80's, it was the first time I saw anything like this. It was a Yellow Boss 302, the front wheel had been replaced by this bolted on chrome stand, so that one could easily see under the cars' fender. I remember telling my friends about this car, it had red oxide and black paint and yellow paint and seam sealer and overspray and paint marks and even a patch of rust. There was a red or burgandy Boss 9, if I recall correctly, beside it. And the judges were scrutinizing the door hinge bolts, trying to find something they could deduct a point on. They were both just beautiful cars. I remember talking to this guy, Bob Perkins (I didn't know who Bob Perkins was). I said to him, "I don't mean to be rude but how can you call these cars Gold class when you have rust under the fenders and this one has paint drips under the hood?" He replied, "yes, but notice that the drips go from left to right and not from right to left".

If we're splitting hairs on paint run directions... while the hood was hooked from the top front, the fenders were hooked from the rear.  So, runs on the hood run from front to back and fenders back to front.  If you see an original paint car, this can usually be seen by looking very closely at small bits of trash in the paint.

Are these procedures consistent with all the plants? I would assume so but that is always the wrong choice, I guess. Did one plant hang the opposite direction on parts? Dearborn?

P.S. I love all the little tricks and details. It will really distinguish things with my car. This stuff is really cool! ;D

I've observed this detail on 65-66 cars from all of the plants.. usually see runs on the back of the fenders and the bottom of the hood.

A lot of your painting questions are shown in picture form in the Assembly Line (members only) section.

2nd set of pics (#16 specifically)
3rd guy in line painting a 65' fender in a horizontal fashion?????

I see some hanging as well. Just wondering. Painted the fenders then hung to get the run effect?
