65 power steering

I'm seeing differences in the power steering linkage between the early Eaton style power steering and the Ford power steering, specifically the tie rods. Looking at the diagrams of the two systems (attached), the tie rods look to be different shapes and also orientated differently for installation.

My own power steering system has the early Eaton power steering (for 260 V8) but the tie rods and linkage have been changed out over time and look to be Ford replacement parts. Can anyone confirm that the two power steering systems are indeed different concerning the tie rods and way they are installed?

I think your first picture is for I-6 power steering, ref Ford Car Parts illustration Sect 36 pg 4. I-6 power steering center link was a two piece item, the link and control assembly, bolted together. V-8 cars used a one piece center link with the control assembly part of the link. The tie rod ends were definitely different between the I-6 and V-8. However, no difference is indicated in Ford Car Parts, sec 30 pg 13, in I-6 power steering tie rod ends for Eaton or Ford pumps for either Mustang or Falcon.

The illustrations in the Ford MPC which that is a copy of sometimes
cover a few different cars, its meant as a representation for the parts
counter guy (which I once was) to find the basic part number of the part,
then he would go to the parts catalog to get the full part number for the
customers specific application. The first picture of the Eaton pump is
showing Mustang 8 cyl, 6 cyl and Falcon applications, the parts can be
shaped differently but the picture is fine for its intended purpose.

+1  Just there for the parts guy. The guys in the service bays had different publications and just plain experience to guide them in doing the hands on work and repair


The MPC illustrations can get you part way there but not a real guide IMHO to restoring every part of your car

Right, just noticed that the illustration concerning the Eaton PS did not specifically say that it applied to V8s, so it is a straight 6 example, hence the difference in tie rod shape and installation.

Again, no difference is indicated in Ford Car Parts, sec 30 pg 13, in I-6 power steering tie rod ends for Eaton or Ford pumps for either Mustang or Falcon. That's not saying there was originally, but it was not serviced.
