Fastback trim below rear window
« on: January 12, 2014, 03:16:33 PM »
Attached is a picture of the fiberglass trim panel below the rear window in a 67 fastback (PN C7ZB-63424A68).

I have two of these panels; the one picture is original to my car and has two sets of holes (as circled), one pair 0.190" dia and the other two holes are approx .275" dia. The second panel I own only has one set of holes, approx 0.190" dia.  The correct dia hole for the rivets that attach this panel to the body is ~0.190".

Why does my original panel have two sets of holes? I don't see any mention of the larger dia hole in any assembly diagram. I should mention that there are holes in the sheet metal of my car, corresponding to both sets of holes. Are the larger holes for rubber bumpers or something? Or were they added my a PO? Neither the holes in the fiberglass panel or the body appear to have been added....i.e. they all look factory IMHO.

In the trap door surround (the metal panels) there are many unused round and oval punched holes. Just part of the design made by an engineer or a few of them

The holes you have marked "Hole for?" appear to be inboard of the ones in the metal trap door surround but it might just be the angle.

There are a couple of versions of the over the trap door panel so the hole number and location differ  though none are used for any purpose I can find.

Now the question about your inner fiberglass panel holes is a more difficult on since in most picture the area is covered by the trap door. Looked at pictures from over 600 67 fastbacks and could not find allot of examples with pictures of this surface but could not find a corresponding hole in the fiberglass when looking through from the trunk side. When I go to the shop this week I'll see what the panels there show. Must be maybe ten or more of those panels there.

Its a bit IMHO unusual to find multiple holes made for rivets on original untouched cars (at the outer corners) but have seen a few times more likely the guy got the hole/fit wrong the first time then corrected. Sure makes for an unattractive installation in many cases

Red arrows in this one show the holes in the sheet metal surround

In this one the green arrows indicate the rivet locations - the red arrows the other unused holes in one of the versions of the upper panel

Jeff, thanks for the pictures.... if you find any fiberglass panels with "extra" holes, please let us know!

For now, what I'll take away from your response is that there are likely several extra holes in this panel and body sorround which didn't serve a purpose in this application. In short, the two holes I circled in green are not supposed to hold rubber bumpers, is that correct?

i would add this. I have seen many of the rounded panels that go in the corners with more than 2 holes as manual shows. I think they were used as needed to get the panel to fit right

+1 Seems that multiple holes in the corner "fiberglass" panels and related mounting brackets is pretty common

Correct - believe only two at the lower corners but will try and confirm ;)
