65 fastback rear courtesy light wiring
« on: September 15, 2013, 07:33:35 AM »
I have an early Dearborn 65 fastback. The rear passenger courtesy lights are there but there is no wiring harness to connect them to the main loom. Does anyone know a part number of have a picture of the wiring harness required?

Thanks,

John

The wiring for the passenger light is basicly a extension cord,
plugs in on the drivers side and runs over to the passenger side,
male connection on one end and female on the other.
I have a used original if you are interested.

Sorry for the late reply C5ZZ. And thankyou for the offer.

Unfortunately, I live in Australia and don't know how I reimburse a private person.

Thanks,

John

I am also missing the wire to the driver’s side rear courtesy light. Is this also a separate harness?

Thanks,

John

There are two separate harnesses to complete the fastback rear courtesy lights.  The first picks up the signal from the tail-light harness and includes a ground wire for the left (driver side) light.  That harness routes over to the passenger side beneath and below the rear window, ending up in a female bullet plug.  The second harness taps into that bullet plug and provides a plug for the light and a ground lug.

The fastback tail-light harness is unique in that is provides a signal for the rear courtesy lights.

Midlife,

You say the first one picks up the signal from the tail light harness. Where about would it connect to the tail light harness? I have no free connector by the left (driver side) courtesy light.

The wiring runs from front to back without any breaks until the fuel sender wire seperates from it

Just forward of that fuel sending wire breakout should be a black/blue wire ending up in a female bullet plug.  If your tail-light harness doesn't have that wire, you can install a separate wire from the main underdash harness (look for a female bullet, two wire black/blue in and around the fuse box) and run it along with the tail-light harness.

Either your black/blue wire has been cut and you can't find it or you have a coupe/fastback tail-light harness.

I just thought I would update you all with what I have found and also what I have decided to do.

I found that the original Fastback harness is supposed to have 6 wires running through it. Mine has only 5 so straight away you know something isn’t right. I then decided that I had two options at this point; the first was to completely replace the whole harness with a reproduction one, or the second was to run a wire from a feed under the dash and wire up the lights myself.

A deciding factor was the fact that my next task is to get the reversing lights working and I want to know that the wiring is correct when I start that job. Also, in the interest of originality, I decided to get a whole new harness. At least this way I know everything should be in order from here on.
